He was going to be release in about 5 years anyway. It's not like we were going to keep him locked away for life. He's a low value trade in that regard.

Looks like some Russian is still good at screwing with American politics. We traded an arms dealer for someone who chose to be in Russia while the state department was warning everyone to not be in Russia and left behind someone that a large portion of Americans think was working for the US government.

Russia considers Whelan a spy and will only trade him for a spy. DOJ just got this one so we just need to wait until he’s in custody: Feds arrest Andriy Derkach, Rudy Giuliani’s Russian spy buddy, for money laundering to duck sanctions.
