The average American has only been to 5 of these places, how many have you been to?

Of course. How out of touch are you?

I've seen a lot of America, but this list is like the most touristy stuff. You can have been to NYC and not have been to the Empire State Building, but seen one of the million other amazing museums or parks or historical sites there.

Actually 20, but what a strange list. Are these things supposed to be equivalent? Can you even “visit” the Hollywood sign?

Seventeen here, but I thought the same thing as this PP. It's kind of an arbitary list. Many people might have zero interest in going to some of these places but tremendous interest in going to others. And is it intended to be some kind of "these are the must-see American sites"? Because historically or geologically or geographically, there are many more that could be considered more significant than a couple of these. Not sure of the point of the list. Where did you get it, OP, and what was the context? Were these meant to be "you're missing out on some full 'American experience' if you don't see...."?

Agree with this. One thing that is glaring to me is the absence of significant Native sites, for instance. Or a lot of historical sites (other than Sumter) that many people visit, whether you're thinking Gettysburg or the Stonewall Inn.

I also get a strong sense, having lived or spent a lot of time in many of the cities with places on this list, that these are what are considered the "must see" tourist destinations for these cities. How terrible! I mean sure, if you are in Vegas, go to the strip. But imagine going to San Francisco and prioritizing Alcatraz? The NYC list is better (Central Park really is a must to me) but still overlooks a lot of stuff that is way more interesting and worthwhile than the Empire State Building (hello, go to a museum).

This list reminds me of a guy I worked with once who would intentionally pick flights with weird layovers if it would enable him to say he'd been to another country. I'm not talking about a 24 hour layover so he could go get dinner and walk around Copenhagen. I mean a 3 hour layover on a flight back from Turkey that was also connecting through Paris, just so he could say he'd been to two additional countries. I was so confused. Who care if you can say you've been a place if you didn't actually get to experience anything there? It seems like the emptiest of bragging rights.

Yeah, the list is really random. I've been to many of the states or cities that these things are in, but could care less about seeing Mount Rushmore or whatever. It's a random list, and I have no idea by what authority they say the "average American" has only been to 5. Did they do a survey? What kind?

Correction 17, just realized I have been to the Gateway Arch

Wait, if the Chicago River is the lake that runs along Miracle Mile lakefront area, then it’s 18

Is that what’s referenced?

The River is in the city - it's the one that's dyed green for St Patrick's Day. The lake is Lake Michigan.
