The average American has only been to 5 of these places, how many have you been to?

Does anyone actually believe the lead in "the average American has only been to 5"? According to what statistic? A clip on the internet???

Believe it. I do not think you know much about how so many Americans actually live and think.

You live in an insulated bubble.

I wouldn’t go to Mt Rushmore or Mall of America on a bet. So stupid!! But I have been to all the other places except Road to Hana which I never heard of.

I’ve done 25, including Mt. Rushmore. It’s very underwhelming, especially in the context of Native American sacred lands in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Median household income was $67,521 in 2020.

Why do you believe everyone is exactly like you, PP?

14, but what counts as been to. Inside or outside (for example, the WH, Golden Gate Bridge [on it or at the park next to it]?)

Actually 20, but what a strange list. Are these things supposed to be equivalent? Can you even “visit” the Hollywood sign?

Seventeen here, but I thought the same thing as this PP. It's kind of an arbitary list. Many people might have zero interest in going to some of these places but tremendous interest in going to others. And is it intended to be some kind of "these are the must-see American sites"? Because historically or geologically or geographically, there are many more that could be considered more significant than a couple of these. Not sure of the point of the list. Where did you get it, OP, and what was the context? Were these meant to be "you're missing out on some full 'American experience' if you don't see...."?

Agree with this. One thing that is glaring to me is the absence of significant Native sites, for instance. Or a lot of historical sites (other than Sumter) that many people visit, whether you're thinking Gettysburg or the Stonewall Inn.

I also get a strong sense, having lived or spent a lot of time in many of the cities with places on this list, that these are what are considered the "must see" tourist destinations for these cities. How terrible! I mean sure, if you are in Vegas, go to the strip. But imagine going to San Francisco and prioritizing Alcatraz? The NYC list is better (Central Park really is a must to me) but still overlooks a lot of stuff that is way more interesting and worthwhile than the Empire State Building (hello, go to a museum).

This list reminds me of a guy I worked with once who would intentionally pick flights with weird layovers if it would enable him to say he'd been to another country. I'm not talking about a 24 hour layover so he could go get dinner and walk around Copenhagen. I mean a 3 hour layover on a flight back from Turkey that was also connecting through Paris, just so he could say he'd been to two additional countries. I was so confused. Who care if you can say you've been a place if you didn't actually get to experience anything there? It seems like the emptiest of bragging rights.

For many years, the only time I had ever been in Phoenix was to transfer to another flight.

Then I had business there and actually had to leave the airport....

Very car centric list.
