“Day drinkers and losers” - I like it! These threads are useless as everyone already knows or can easily access rankings. Also, anyone can read the methodology of a specific ranking. We don’t need trolls to tell us what we already know or pretend to be more informed than the poll publishers. |
No Then why is law school referred to t14? T20 makes sense because that’s the historical cut off before you hit the first publics |
I moved to the DMV a decade ago from NYC and did not know UVA was a top school. Over the years, I occasionally mentioned that outside the DC area, I don’t think UVA is considered a top school. I still believe this despite living in VA where people LOVE UVA. I was just in Manhattan and many of my friends attended T20 schools. They all want to attend ivy schools like their parents. UVA is never mentioned as a safety or a target and definitely not as a reach. I also have a teenager and of course he will apply to UVA but it is not somewhere he wants to go. |
This is a repeat type of post. The old, “no one in the NE mentions UVA so it can’t be any good.” Totally false. Look at the college matriculations of the best boarding schools in the NE and UVA is always a prominent choice. Also, plenty of UVA alumni in the NE. How can a New Yorker claim to be educated and have no knowledge or respect for UVA? |
I have neighbors and close friends who attended UVA. We have professional colleagues who attended UVA. Our friends are starting to send their kids to college and I congratulate them. I would be totally fine if one of my kids ends up at UVA. I’m surprised Georgetown and Johns Hopkins isn’t mentioned as much and isn’t as boosted as UVA. Those are schools I was very familiar with. |
Back when I was a kid UVA and UC Berkeley were the top public universities. For a long time, UVA was the top public university period. Well it was the first public university but it still counts.

I didn’t know or I don’t remember where everyone from my high school went to college. UMich was the safety at my high school. All the smart kids who didn’t get into an ivy or t20 school either went to UMich, NYU or Tufts. Yes, I know UVA is ranked higher than Tufts. Tufts was considered a safety just like UMich. I also know college admissions today is vastly different from the 90s. |
| According to Exeter’s website, their students are matriculating at UVA in similar numbers to Dartmouth, Northwestern, and Williams, and at twice the rate of Stanford and Duke. So, how is it that no one in the NE wants to attend or respects UVA? |
Also, Georgetown and Hopkins were good schools but much easier to get into than UVA 30+ years ago. |
I didn’t apply to any publics. I always thought publics were for poor people and I wasn’t even rich. |
The bottom of the class at Exeter is going to UVA. I went to Harvard where also many Exeter students attend. |
Is this still true? Is it easier to get into Georgetown and Hopkins over UVA? My kid is only in middle school. We know a lot of siblings who got rejected from Georgetown and UVA. |
Another one is UCLA. It's come up a lot in the ratings but when I was a kid, it was just a party school. |
There was a recent thread about how great Northeastern was. Back in the day, Northeastern was slightly above community college if you went to school in Boston. BU was the party school with all the international students. Supposedly now are reach schools? Shrug. |
Look, no one is saying that UVA is Harvard. However, saying that UVA is not known or appreciated in the NE is untrue. As for Exeter matriculations, I’m sure the top 10-20% of the class goes to an Ivy, but there are MANY students who don’t, per the school’s website. As for where UVA falls in the mix, it is far more popular than many other schools, suggesting it is a desirable admit. |
