Here is the thing - if you got a stop sign citation there is an on-line video! That you can share and prove you were improperly cited.

The outraged guy who started the Nextdoor thread actually had the decency to share his video and guess what - he coasted right through the stop sign! He didn't even get close to the spirit of a legal stop to say nothing of the actual letter of the law.

There is a guy on that thread who has now posted 2 30-40 second videos he shot at 44th and Fessenden and in neither video does even a single driver make a legal stop and only a couple of drivers even come close.

The guy over in Crestwood who is outraged he got 3 citations at 17th and Blagden and has been bloviating on the Crestwood listserve for months also shared all 3 of his video citations and guess what - he also didn't come close to a legal stop! He doesn't even claim in interviews that he actually made legal stops just that it is outrageous and unfair that the law is being strictly enforced.

NP here who doesn’t even live in that area, so please don’t attack me. What’s wrong with these stops? From this angle, it seems like the driver came to a complete stop, albeit a brief one.

No they didn't. They slowed to a crawl and then sped back up. A car coming to a complete stop, even a brief one, will rock backward when its forward momentum disappears.

Looked like a stop to me. What additional safety is gained by waiting four seconds?

I love crossing as a pedestrian when people "come to a stop" but are really just rolling at me as I cross.

Be happy with a ticket. If it was up to me...

Was there a pedestrian there at the time? Haven't seen the video. If there was, then the operator shoud definitely get a failure to yield ticket, which presumably costs more, and points. That's the type of infraction we need enforcement of. If there wasn't then I don't understand. It is safer to have a little momentum when turning into an intersection with oncoming traffic. Especially considering the rampant speeding.

Here a deal: no more tickets for rolling a stop sign when no one is around, but cameras on EVERY stop sign and crosswalk that give tickets every time when a pedestrian is around. Sound good?

No, this doesn't sound good. Pedestrians are safer if drivers stop every time. You're trying to create a world where you only get a ticket if you actually endanger a person, but by relying on drivers to decide whether a person is likely to be around ad hoc. Drivers, particularly those who think "let's make a deal I break the law when I want and no harm no foul" is a good deal, are not good at risk assessment. Stop at stop signs. Even if you don't think there's a person nearby. Because that's the law.

Stop signs are the simplest part of driving. My three year old knows what they mean. The fact that so many people on this thread are flummoxed and then outraged by them makes me think that an IQ test should be part of the application to get a drivers license.

If a pedestrian is not around then it doesn't impact their safety whatsoever. The rule is simple, if a pedestrian is there then all non-pedestrians are supposed to yield. That is the law. The purpose of stop signs is to identify who has the right of way and who needs to yield.

Gor instance, I just saw a cyclist not only blow a stop sign but also turn left into the path of a car already stopped at a stop sign. This clear cut failure to yield was a major safety hazard and a blatant violation of both the spirit and letter of the law.

And no, your 3 year old does not know what a complete stop is. 99.9% of people do not come to a complete stop every single time, including yourself. I am far more concerned about people following the spirit of the law than the letter. There are a host of safety reasons, including visibility around bushes, why people do not always stop behind the line or come to a complete standstill 100% of the time.

Actually, the law is to stop behind the white line before proceeding. That is the law. You want to rewrite it so that you can pick and choose which stop signs deserve real stops and when you can continue on your merry way. Except your imaginary new law the cyclist you're so mad at did nothing wrong, because a car is not a pedestrian. Oh wait, what's that? It's east, but I think this may actually be true -- I was walking past this intersection yesterday and noticed the camera flash at a car that definitely had definitely come to a complete stop.

I for one am sick and tired of all the damn commuters driving like absolute maniacs through residential areas. Especially MD drivers. They speed, run stop signs, blow through red lights, rudely blare their horns at you when you stop at a crosswalk for crossing pedestrians, rudely blare their horns at you for not turning on red at a clearly posted "no turn on red" intersection, and god forbid you're actually driving safely and legally and obeying the speed limit, because then some of them will swerve into the oncoming lane and pass you unsafely.

Fck every last one of them. DC needs to ramp up enforcement against MD drivers in particular. Boot or impound their cars if they haven't paid fines, turn them over to collections agencies and ruin their credit, I honestly don't care what happens to those drivers because they make our streets and neighborhoods unsafe.

It's flashed at me numerous times when I've come to a complete stop and I've never gotten a ticket. I wonder if it takes a picture of every car that drives by, for whatever reason.

I got a ticket there in august. You can see my car stopped as another car crosses the intersection. I signed up to contest it online. I waited in the virtual hearing for an hour and no one showed. I haven’t gotten any follow up done that hearing. It was in mid November.

Nope, nothing listed. The flash goes off every time I go through that intersection, and I make sure to stop in full, usually for like 5 seconds of no one is behind me. I don't want to take any chances with those cameras.
