Another gunman, another elementary school

I’m the hashtag poster from a few pages ago. I get that it seems naive but I have been amazed at the social changes brought about by social media movements in the wake of tragedies and controversies. Heck, last year half the bakeries and florists on social media felt pressure to post about BLM in the wake of George Floyd because it became something you just had to take a stand on. An issue of decency but also of peer pressure. Why shouldn’t all the same public figures be compelled to post about this tragedy and whether they support gun control? Why shouldn’t CEO’s be compelled to state a position? Why shouldn’t this be a question for every sheriff at every press conference?

I’m old and not even active on social so maybe I don’t get it. But my generation’s tactics haven’t worked and the country is desperate for this issue to be reframed…some grassroots shift that allows entrenched positions to shift just a bit.

Alex Jones won't because he's been sued up the wazoo. But I wouldn't be surprised if other right-wing gun nuts claim it's a hoax.

Oh Tucker will step up. These are his kind of people.

Tucker is a White Supremacist, so not really.

Can any of dcum’s resident lawyers speak to the recent lawsuit that was successful against a gun manufacturer because of their marketing? That also feels like a potential way to address gun nut culture. That and arresting the parents

He was white?

We could put metal detectors at schools. To stop shooters from entering schools.

Or, we can call Republicans mean names and talk about a fantasy world without guns. Your choice.

How are metal detectors going to help? Will they magically stop an armed crazy person from passing? In sandy hook didn’t the shooter enter through a shot out window?

Agreed, it is terrible. I pray that they will stand strong in the midst of dealing with the trauma and the grief.

Alex Jones claimed that Sandy Hook was fake and staged. The parents and first responders endured not only the trauma and the grief of the day, but of his and his followers sick lies and harassment. I hope that doesn't happen again.

Police knew all about this weirdo, but yet against they did not “connect the dots.”

And just like other recent insane murderers, FaceBook was happy to host his weirdness, where he signaled his intent.

Why does Facebook always get a pass?

This man was Latino.

Latino is not a race. Hispanic is actually considered "white".

Backbends to try to make this person a white redneck Come ON. Does this type of statement console the families? No.

You know what they did in thr UK after something like this happened in Scotland? They passed strict gun laws. And guess what? No more dead classrooms full of kids.

Trump, Abbott and Cruz are set to address the NRA annual meeting over the weekend. Please someone use this moment to shift opinion.

A country awash in guns kills its citizens by suicide as well as homicide.
Gun availability increases suicide fatalities, whereas gun control reduces suicide fatalities:

The real question is, if guns are banned, will other methods rise? I predict yes.

But we do have gun laws, and criminals and mentally ill people break them. Keeping guns out of the hands of law abiding, sane citizens will not fix the problem. Crack down on real criminals would be one way to get started. But instead, we're doing the complete opposite.

Good guys with guns are not stopping the bad guys with guns. The gun culture in this country is the problem and the lax regulations are a symptom. It all needs to change.

In this case, the good guys with guns killed the gunman. Why there was not one resource officer at the actual school is a whole other issue. How did he get in?

We support a nearly total ban on firearms, even if it means no guns for us.

+1000. Here, here. I'm the ex-military PP. I'm with you 1000%.

If we ban firearms, how do we ensure the bad guys turn theirs in?

Or we can ban guns and make a “fantasy” come to life.

Could? Or should?

If we can, when is that happening? What's the timeliness or expected effective date?
