Ethnic cleansing in Eastern Europe - when will the United Nations declare this a genocide?

Russia was suspended from the UN Human Rights Council. They also need to be suspended from the UN National Security Council. Per UN charter they should not be allowed to participate in proceedings relating to a conflict that they themselves are a party to.

That will never happen thanks to China.

Well, there are no Russian civilians for them to brutalize, so there's that.

According to Putin they are Russian. God what a loser that man is

Are they moronic conscripts (everyone smart evading conscription)? Hardened Chechnyans? Can't figure out who would apparently have been waiting in the wings to dive into this kind of depraved behavior. Shame on Russia!

I have no idea but God have mercy on all these victims of war crimes. May God help Ukraine to prevail against these unimaginable evils.

I know Ukraine and outside international human rights groups are methodically documenting incidents of war crimes. I hope that it is declared genocide soon and these barbarians are brought to Justice as quickly as possible. It will take time though, which the innocents trying to escape do not have.

It is so painful to hear about these horrors visited on civilians, but we have to not look away even when Ukraine eventually drops off the front page.

They need to put in UN blue hat soldiers now, like they would in any other genocide conflict zone. Not NATO, UN. Agree with Zelensky, what's the point of the UN if all talk.

UN peacekeepers are just third country troops with a blue hat. The UN does not have a standing army. They also don't fight back. They take a long time to source and equip. They need approval from the Security Council. In short. It would take awhile, they wouldn't do anything and they wouldn't be approved because of Russia. They're only useful after a peace deal for disarmament, demobilization and reintegration.

Yes they are and they should be there.

The UN is a voluntary association of nearly 200 sovereign states but is not a world government. The member states determine the organization’s priorities, programs and budget.

Granted, The UN Security Council is a joke with Russia and China holding veto power over any decisions. It obviously Needs major reforms. Even there, it is the US that has used the security council veto power most often related to Israel and Palestine.

It is not supposed to be a military operation but a venue for international cooperation and agreement for humanitarian, development and peacekeeping operations. Peacekeepers are supplied by the 200 member states. However with Russia on the security council, peacekeepers will never be deployed in Ukraine. The UN needs to dissolve the security council and restart that essential part of the UN peacekeeping operations.

But other UN agencies do a lot of good in the world. It is messy and hyper political trying to get many different countries to the same tables.

They are obviously Far from perfect, but do a lot of good around:
Monitoring and improving Public health in developing countries;
Refugee monitoring and coordination; and
Working on Sustainable development goals for reducing extreme poverty.

Many problems facing the wealthy countries cannot be tackled in isolation or on bilateral levels (climate change/ terrorism).

They need to get the peacekeepers in..let Russia drop munitions on a bunch of Pakistanis in blue hats and see how many friends they lose that way.

Obviously I don't want them to drop munitions - would be a deterrent

Yeah we have to get Russia off the security council before any peace keepers can get in … but I agree in general.

Putin has leaned on India and China for International support in his mission to dethrone US and Western dominance in world economy. Russia acting violently against Asian peacekeepers would undermine Putin’s vision of Eurasian ethnic nationalism/ empire glory. (Putin’s philosopher Dugan contended that only by restoring greater Russia to Eurasian Union could Russia become a credible global player). Putin and Asian allies had hoped to counter US and Western dominance with their democratic nations being built on civic responsibility, rule of law, Rights of individuals and minorities and freedom of speech but I doubt that China realized how brutal and barbaric towards innocent civilians he was prepared to be.

Putin’s so called “civilization border” of Russia is such a cruel joke given how inhuman and uncivilized his troops are behaving towards innocents in Ukraine. It is not just a war against liberal democracy that is savagely being carried out in Ukraine but Putin is going back to a dangerous, irredentist and ethnic nationalist view of sovereignty and self determination.

The UN may not be perfect, but we need some kind of international body where basic human rights can be agreed upon and defended.

That is the worst, most brazen disinformation. That poster should be ashamed.

Unfortunately, disinformation posters are beyond shame.

That is a Kremlin talking point - people working for his disinformation factories pose as Americans on social media platforms and out that rubbish out. I would not assume whoever is saying those outright lies is an American.

It is this absolutely. Though everything there is to write about it has already been written for different places, people and times. We’ll say again: never again. Till the next time it happens.

That’s how USSR behaves in Afghanistan. Everyone talks about the US war in Afghanistan, but somehow forgetting the Soviet troops invading Afghanistan on Christmas Eve 1979 for 10 years cause complete and total destruction. Imagine what they are doing now in era of satellite images, mobile phones and internet, and what happened then, in Afghanistan and then 20 years later in Chechnya.

And Syria. 89% of the civilian deaths and atrocities in Syria were at the hands of Assad and Syria, followed by ISIS.
