They collectively feel that they are a glorious world power with a mighty military and thus they deserve more respect. No one there feels little and sad. You sure are a "latcher" huh? My theory is that Russia has a huge inferiority complex due to the diminishment of the USSR, causing them to lash out. This is akin to the rise of Hitler/Nazis after the humiliations of WW1.
