(1) You don’t have to say “alleged” if you aren’t identifying someone with your statement. A person is not alleged to have done this. They did it! Car was jacked with child in backseat.

(2) If you are going to carjack, and I’d prefer you didn’t but if you do, I feel like you at a minimum should check the backseat first to see if there are children, pets, sick elderly relatives, etc. Just as a courtesy. And to limit your crimes to grand theft auto and assault, stopping short of kidnapping and false imprisonment.

This is the problem. We can have no confidence that known-to-be-violent criminals stay off our streets and away from our families as long as Charles Allen (and, frankly though I respect his intelligence and seriousness, Racine) remain in office.

Well you can take their advice which is to avoid areas where these people live or keep children away from public parks.

I wonder if we’re going to be Detroit in 10 years. Our downtown is being gutted by telework. We lost 20k people last year. And our city council is Uber liberal and doesn’t want to fight crime.

This. Or like DC before Anthony Williams. The bad old days will come again if residents and politicians forget that those days were really bad. At least the last decade of progress has already been erased; the city council is now working on erasing 2000-2010 progress. They won't rest until Marion Barry's ghost gets reelected!

It’s not coincidental that all the data points to DC peaking in 2015.

I know a lot of people like Bowser, but that’s really the problem. She’s just been a god awful leader that has taken the city back, instead of moving it forward. The longer she’s in charge the worse it’s going to be. The true fear is that it will take DC hitting bottom before her core constituency of white professional women will finally turn their back in her.

Vince Gray started the pushback against gentrification. His election heralded the beginning of the city's decline. Before him, we were aiming for a city that could maintain a thriving middle class of complete families. Williams and Fenty promoted the idea that cities should have good schools and that "world class" shouldn't be a lie or a joke. Under Vince Gray, we had his staff's admission (maybe from Linda Cropp?) that they were no longer interested in keeping educated families in the city and they would never recognize us as constituents toward whom they held any obligations. If we left, fine. We would always be replaced by an ever-refreshed pool of childless young adults who pay taxes but do not compete with their "real" constituents for city services.

When I was young and childless I don't think I paid attention to any of this but there was definitely a big shift. This recounting of history explains a lot.

Was realistic about Barry but he was getting kids internships at accounting firms, he did not treat them and their futures as disposable. It is mostly poor black and brown people who are the victims of crime, why is that never the focus?

Because victims have no political value for progressives - they demand accountability and tough on crime measures. Criminals you can claim are acting out due to society then feel good about releasing them. If more affluent people become victimized you will see a sharp change in the direction of DC.

I disagree about the affluent people part. You know the response will be, "look how privileged these people are, who cares if they get carjacked at gunpoint?"

Then, when those same affluent people leave, they will complain about that too...

DC seems to view its upper quarter of earners as cash cows to be milked, but who shouldn't dare expect anything in return.

The only people that DC cares about are those who own commercial real estate, those who develop real estate and as a function of the other two, those who pay commercial rent.

MPD needs to be treating these carjackings as a bigger picture item. Most of the criminals are just random run-of-the-mill thugs, many of them are teens. They individually wouldn't have the wherewithal to chop the car and resell for parts, or to spirit it out of the country or anything else.

Who asked them to get the car? Who are all of these carjackers planning on delivering the cars to?

There is no doubt more going on than just a stupid, short, dangerous joy ride that's likely to end up with a criminal record.

One thing I don't get is that DC has and uses license plate scanners.

They use them for parking enforcement - (though for some reason they don't seem to flag things like the DCFD guys who park illegally with their license plates illegally removed/covered).

Yet it seems to me they could also be used for carjackings/thefts/amber alert/other persons of interest...
