I’ll go further and say that most Americans know an illegal immigrant (or suspect they are illegal) and appreciate them for the work they do and their life goals, even if they think the immigration system needs to be reformed. No American wants to see their daycare lady, house cleaner or roofer be so badly treated. I think there is more xenophobia triggered by the flood of Venezuelans who overwhelmed the system in places but everyone knows a Latino worker. |

Census considers race separately from ethnicity. Really, the stereotypical Hispanic is someone who has indigenous ancestors as well as, possibly, European. Not sure how prevalent but I know there are people in Latin America who fixate on their degree of "pure" European ancestry. (Besides all the ones who have immigrated from European countries and Canada/US generally). |
