FCPS is turning the new high school purchased to fix crowding into an Aviation magnet school instead of a high school??

You said they were a "vocal minority"

I am a Xfield elementary parent and everyone I know wants to stay at Oakton. I am also not on the PTO board.

Well, this is exactly why I’m not ruling out Option B. These Oakton parents will fight really hard against being reassigned to KAA.

Speaking of Option B, it might be the cleanest solution. The entire Floris community would move to KAA, avoiding a split feeder.

They could also consider moving Oak Hill students to Carson and Crossfield students to Franklin, which means all Carson kids would be going to KAA (obviously Franklin needs to become an AAP center for this to happen).

Those parents of older kids who may prefer option B are really screwing over people with younger kids. Oakton HS will absolutely be over 105% at the next boundary review. There are literally thousands of multifamily and townhouse units going up in the next year or two within the Oakton boundary (Fairfax Ridge, AT&T site, Fair Oaks Business Site, Redwood Plaza, Flint Hill Office Park). If Crossfield doesn't become part of KAA now they will stuck moving to South Lakes in 2031. There won't be room anywhere else.

But, it splits Fox Mill.
And, it still has FCPS putting kids on extremely long bus rides.

Option B does NOT split Fox Mill.

Bus rides is important but we are talking about Crossfield parents who would fight to stay DESPITE the long bus ride.

It's clear Oakton families have different views about being reassigned to the Western HS. I'm starting to think you're a South Lakes parent who is trying to suggest they shouldn't bother with options that would move the part of Crossfield that feeds to Oakton to the new school because you favor Option B.

the people that I know who want to stay at Oakton have older kids. The ones who want to go to KAA have younger kids. I see both POVs, and they should allow grandfathering with bussing for current 7-9

There's a good chance many of these plans will stall. NoVa's economy is hurting now.

What’s not stalling is scenario 4 moving parts of Fairfax HS into Oakton. There are neighborhoods in Fairhill lobbying to move in too.

I have younger kids and I want them to stay Oakton and ideally move to Franklin so the split isn't as bad. My kids are involved in high level sports. They don't even have the facilities, let alone coaches or a promising future. My kids have been playing with and building relationships with Oakton slotted kids in multiple sports for the past 6 years. My kids have been going through the renovations at crossfield for the past 3 years. Oakton has finally finished their renovations. I don't want them to go right into a high school that will be doing renovations the whole time they're there. Oakton is highly rated with excellent teachers. Western high School is unknown. Oakton has proven to be safe and secure school with little violence.

Doubtful. These developments are all in the final approval stages or have already been approved. These aren't just ideas or plans.

Letting any part of Fairhill leave Falls Church just as Falls Church's expansion is wrapping up would be a good sign that they've totally jumped the shark.

What you are feeling makes sense, but I just don't think you will get that choice. I honestly believe your choice will be between KAA now or South Lakes starting in 2031.

Approval means permission, not construction.

You say you have younger kids so why would your young kids have to go through a high school renovation? And what "young" kids are in high level sports and what exactly are these “high level” sports? T-ball? U8 rec soccer? Unless your 3rd grader is getting NIL offers, I think you’ll be okay. Every school in this county is experiencing renovations (which is a good thing long term!), and the coaches aren’t scouting elementary PE class. Also, Oakton didn’t become “safe and secure” because of its zip code it’s because the kids, parents, and staff make it that way. Western might surprise you if you give it a chance instead of writing it off.

People are too entitled in this area and catering to it is how you end up with all these weird boundaries that don't work well. I come from an area where schools were always being built and boundaries were drawn and finalized behind closed doors. I moved to the area and started 3rd at a brand new elementary with 4th and maybe 5th graders who didn't get a choice. I then started 6th at a brand new MS with 7th graders who didn't get a choice, and then started 9th at a brand new HS with 10th graders who did get choice, but that was it and life moved on. Everything and everyone turned out fine, promise.

Current and future Oakton sports parents are a big part of the opposition to moving. They’re a little nuts.

To be accurate, the vast majority of the Crossfield homes are Herndon addresses and much farther from Oakton than the new Western HS.
