Coconut Oil

Anyone out there use coconut oil to cook with? Can I use it the same way as say, canola oil? Are there any particular cuisines which it pairs best with?

I've seen Aarti on the Food Network use it several times during her shows. She does Indian cuisine.

I use coconut oil a lot! You have two choices - unrefined, which tastes a bit coconutty, and refined/expeller pressed, which tastes like nothing at all. I'm picky about the brands I buy, and I like the coconut flavor so I buy unrefined/virgin.

I've pan-fried steak, made scrambled eggs, and anything else you need oil for, with coconut oil.

Plenty of recipes on this website - see the Recipes tab on the left side - http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/

Thanks, guys-this is unrefined. Definitely going to check out the recipes on the link provided.

Itmay have a lower smoking point so possibly mix it with canola or use low heat.

Coconut oil is great- it has a great texture/consistency so can be used in place of butter in baking. I have only used the non-flavor kind. It is expensive but i feel really good about feeding it to my kids.

OP, just for further information ,this is a tub of Nutiva brand organic extra virgin cold pressed pure white unrefined, not deordorized or bleached. States on the tub 'ideal as a high heat (350 degrees) cooking oil. I know, a lot of info, but again, I've never used this before and apparently, many of you have. I actually received accidentally from Amazon with another food order.

Sounds great to me, OP.

Another delicious option if you'd like a foray into something different:

I cook with it all the time and have never had a problem. I'd never mix it with canola oil - yuck.

I use it anytime I'd use oil to cook. Much, much, much healthier than canola.

It's great that you're using coconut oil. It's a great plant-based source of healthy fat and lauric acid. Be careful of using it with canola oil, actually be careful of using canola oil period. It's a highly, highly refined (bleached) oil and is especially unhealthy when heated to high temperatures.

Enjoy the coconut oil!

can you really use coconut oil instead of butter? Will it hold up in baked goods?

Yes you can, absolutely. Not the same flavor, but I use it all the time.
