Not saying you're wrong, because I have no idea, but it wouldn't make as much sense to torture the maid because she has nothing to give them. (Presumably.) If you're looking for cash you focus on the homeowner usually, not the maid. And if you have the homeowner's wife, husband, and especially child handy, you don't need to torture the maid either, because any of the other three targets presumably are much better for getting the results you want. If I hadn't read the housekeeper was found in a chair with the other adults, I would have assumed they'd killed her immediately. One less person to keep track of while you focus on the parents and child. And maybe they did and left her there for them to think about while they themselves were tortured or while their son was tortured. I wouldn't put anything past someone who could perpetrate a crime like this.

And then I assume they killed everyone, even if they hadn't been planning to do so from the start, to keep them from identifying them later. So sickening.

Well if we are going off that theory then why torture the wife if you have the kid or vice versa..reports said that it was an obvious bloody slain that took place..if your not slaying everyone I'd think you're not doing it because of satisfaction of doing it..your doing it because it is personal. Like the perp hates this guy so much he's going to make him watch him ruin his world but doesn't touch the maid in that way because she has done nothing to him...understand? The whole thing doesn't make a lot of sense but you don't beat and stab and burn people if it's not personal.

I have no idea. I can't envision any circumstance in which I would beat or stab or burn anybody. And yet I read about people who do -- to people they know, people they don't know, whatever. The other day I read an op-ed in the NYT in which a guy recounted that when he was a young man, walking along one night, a group of teenagers jumped him. He didn't know them. They drove up and beat him so badly he was in the hospital and still has scars decades later. They did it for the joy of it. I can't fathom it, but clearly there are people like this out there. I'm not saying that what happened to this poor family wasn't personal -- it may well have been. But it's not like there is no other explanation, either. Awful people do awful things.

someone posted before a link about the murdered couple in Chevy Chase back in 2008. They were tied up with cords, stabbed, killed by blunt force in a horrific way. the killers were young central americans.

Just read the story about the Harvey family in Richmond - killed in January 2006. Random home invasion. I was living there at the time and the whole community was just stunned that anyone could stab, bludgeon and set fire to random people, including two little girls.

Very true, I agree..but like you in your own story those people did it for the joy of it. I would think that if it were for the "joy of it" here in this case then they all would of been slain. I'm just trying to make sense of it and that's all I can come up with. The only people that really know where the ones involved.

Although I don't know about every Latino and Black person out there but I do know that many "new rich" from the post-communist countries prefer to send their kids to boarding schools in England and Switzerland.
And the fact that the family sent two older girls to two DIFFERENT boarding schools might be indeed because the family lived in fear all along... Or not but it sure fits the picture.

such a ridiculous thing to say. there are sick, depraved, awful people of every racial and ethnic group, sadly. there are plenty of instances of latino and black people (and white and Asian and every other racial or ethnic group) doing horrible things to people, yes, including children.

Doesn't make sense that if a money drop was scheduled for Thursday why they would show up on Wednesday. I don't believe the money was scheduled. If the money was for the martial arts store then why not take it there? why drop it off at all to the home? and drop it off 40K at the front door? obviously he is trusted with the money since he has it to drop off. It doesn't add up. The scenario where he is instructed to call AIW and request the money to pay the ransom makes more sense
