As a follow up and last option. They were told in person, or called on the phone, and the third/last way if they weren't able to be reached by the first two, was via text.

Only those who had wanted to know by text.
They tried to call everyone in person.

I'm sorry to hear this news but I can't say that it's unexpected. My heart goes out to the families, how sad.

Even as unlikely as it seemed, I wanted to believe there might be survivors. I hope they didn't suffer. And hopefully this will give a little peace to the families.

Perhaps Malaysian airlines is not taking proper care of their planes??? There have been 2 incidents since the 370 disaster. One involved birds and I assume those things happen. Here is one that seems preventable:

Here's the thing. It's easy to rag on Malaysia, because of these recent incidents and their lack of experience in handling crashes. In a way, that's actually a good thing - having experiences with crashes isn't a kind of experience you want on your record. No such incident is good, but I'm pretty sure US airlines are pretty far ahead of the curve when it comes to dealing with plane crashes and maintenance problems. We've had a lot more of these incidents. So we handle them better, but they also still happen far more frequently here.

I'm sure you;re so ultra-PC you're afraid of upsetting anyone but here's the thing. If you want to have a large international airline then you must be held to certain standards, or you end up killing people from many other countries, and causing the world to spend hundreds of millions in resources looking for your plane. It's obvious that Malaysia can't support this infrastructure but like most third world countries they have a misapplication of resources. We also have a lot more incidents because we have much more air travel. Duh!

Exactly. Thank you.

Super weird. It's not like satellite data or even analysis based on such data needs almost two weeks to be processed.

My understanding is it's a whole new method they created JUST for this event and data set. They weren't sitting on it, they were actively working on it.

I asked this question and have now seen the answer. They had to compare other flights, so it did take time:

ugh…if these people *were* alive and are not now due to this botched search, that would be the worst.

This is my fear. What if the plane actually ditched rather than crashing and the passengers were still alive? It seems odd that they would find a debris field consisting of a deployed evacuation slide and life rafts. What a horrible way to die.

Why? He looks so unprofessional, always looks sloppy.

18:04 the lithium issue is real, I think. I believe it's a real issue because on PPRuNe.org, the pilot's blog website that has been following this issue, there have been a bunch of pilot posts about how incredibly dangerous the lithium battery situation is and how they are onboard every flight, and how this has to change. One of their running theories is that the batteries (which were in the cargo hold) caught fire and the plane's sharp turn to the left (west) would be the pilot's logical response because the closest land-able runway is there.

Also, the Malaysian authorities changed their timeline story again (I think on Sunday but the news didn't filter out until Monday) and this change makes the plane in distress scenario more likely and pilot hijacking less likely. So all that brainpower, speculation, and search resources wasted because they read the info wrong.

I know the Malays have been trying, but I do blame them for being way over their heads and not handing info off faster to countries like US who can interpret data.

This.

Back to the "so what happened????" part of this thread.

Where do you all come out? Accident or malice on the part of the pilot or someone else in the flight?

Seems hard to believe there would be no distress call if it were an accident. On the other hand, who would intentionally fly a plane to the south pole until it ran out of fuel??

Someone with a lot of malice.

It was no accident.
