2024 Washington DC area College commits

You’d be very hard pressed to find a kid in the dmv that hasn’t played a travel sport. Lol

My siblings make a lot less than us and all 3 of their kids were heavily into travel sports. It’s not a “rich privilege thing”. 1/2 my oldest kid’s team plays on club scholarships/aid. Many need kids need rides to games because their parents are working 2-3 jobs.

BTW, most of the T10 schools don't care much about legacy, especially not during regular decision.

I have a much bigger problem with legacy than an athlete.

I was a D1 athlete-scholar and the amount of sacrifices I made and hours during the week I spent on my sport—and travel in college…it was a beast. It is a lot a lot of dedication and personal work…in the backyard, at the field by yourself, getting up at the crack of dawn for pre-school workouts, etc…and then excelling in your courses

Anyone who has been around a prestigious college knows that there is a fairly wide gulf in the average ability of those admitted for non-academic reasons and those admitted for academic reasons. There are of course athletes (and legacies) who are exceptional scholars, but the difference in the general admissions standards is clear. But such is the way of American colleges. Administrators are almost universally of the view that large and expensive sports programs attract donations and thereby improve the quality of their offerings. It isn't clear that this view is particularly well-founded, but it doesn't appear destined to change any time soon. None of which to say that student athletes don't work their asses off - I would hire an Academic All-American over almost any other applicant.

It is much, MUCH less of a gulf for the top D3 schools and Ivies and it also depends on the sport. My kid was told they needed a '35 ACT' or equivalent, and high gpa--and then some schools still depend on the kid getting in on his own before they will 'commit' commit them. My kid is WL at a few and has been told if he eventually gets in --he can play on the team--but there is no pull by the coach for this to happen. One of the Ivy coaches told him they were just sorting out to see which players were admitted. So you might see these late 'commits' but it often is zero $ and zero weight in the admission to the school. Hopkins also will add kids very late--and they were very strict about academics. My kid was told at ID camps you needed the stats to get into the school and the first thing they do is look at your gpa before reading your email.

For the very high $$$ sports at the front-facing national D1 leaders--there is of course a much, much greater gulf. BUT look at the attention these football and basketball players bring to those schools and the amount of $$$ the schools earn because of them..and the amount of kids that apply simply because they love the program want to watch the games. IT's a BIG deal.

You people are so nasty. The comments about the MIT commits are disgusting. Would you post your comment in the instagram announcement? I doubt it. I know both girls and can tell you that they both would have a shot of getting in without their sports. Believe it or not kids can play a sport, be social and be smart.

^100. MIT doesn’t even commit until you’re in. It’s horrible. These girls are brilliant! And just because your high stats kid didn’t get in, that doesn’t mean they aren’t brilliant too. These schools have to fill classes that are dynamic and diverse. Don’t diminish the accomplishments of amazing scholar/athletes.

Something to keep in mind… These IG lists aren’t complete stats. Just this week we saw several updates from seniors admitted to Princeton and Yale which were not posted on IG.

Thanks, Captain Obvious. All one has to do is compare the number of IG posts to the number of students in the graduating class (usually found on the school’s profile) to figure that out.

You all are so deeply invested in this. How much time are you spending on these HS Instagram pages, making lists and comparing and scanning for updates? How closely do you think this behavior is linked to the high levels of stress so many kids are under?

Yes, but you seem to hang your hat on every ivy admit being posted and they clearly are not.
Considering the level of vitriol here I’d never have my child post there.

It’s gross the way adults follow and tear kids and schools down. Just abhorrent behavior.

What a surprise - marginally qualified athlete justifies her admission based on how hard she worked. As if everyone else doesn’t work hard.
