Yep.

This isn't happening. You can smell it.

This is becoming more and more like the Commanders' doomed attempt to move to Virginia in the 1990s. Potomac Yard site? Check. Big splashy news conference announcing the move? Check. Failure to get everyone except the governor of Virginia on board? Check.

And Bowser’s DC government is so good at enforcement….

DC government is very good at real estate and extracting tax revenues from land owners/lessees. I'm pretty amazed at the level of development over the last 15 years - that's all been due to the DC government and private sector working together.

Ted is trying to pull one over on DC. It's not going to work. He's paying a sweetheart rent of only $900K per year to DC for the land under the arena. He's hemmed in by his lease, which flips to market rate in 2027. That's why he wants to pay back the bond and get out of CapitalOne arena.

Ted knows he's f#cked in 2027 when the ground lease re-opens and the District is going to demand a huge hike in rents. What we are seeing playout in real time is a haggling between tenant (Ted) and the landlord (DC government).

Except he is relying on a GOP governor in a purple state who has done nothing to reach across the aisle for funding a $2billion boondoggle. I love the GlennDome moniker. It totally fits.

I wish it weren't happening, but it seems pretty likely to happen. The governor wants it and the owner of the team wants it. If they have to throw a little bit more (of someone else's) money around to make it happen, they'll find a way.

I’m not so sanguine.

The Virginia appropriations committee moved it forward as a “negotiating chip for other priorities”.

Alexandria politicians are canceling in person events to hear from their constituents.

Virginia taxpayers better get ready to pay up. We’re going to be on the hook for this travesty and there is no way the rosy predictions about revenue are going to happen.

The governor is antagonizing the legislature than he needs to get his legacy project. It's becoming obvious that local residents don't support it and fans don't support it. Anyone remember when the commanders were moving to Woodbridge?

Hopefully they can create a special tax district to cover short falls limited to the bounds on Youngkin's house in Great Falls

Anyone who thinks this isn’t happening doesn’t know the political sausage making process in Richmond. Key Democrats like Louise Lucas are currently staking out their positions to negotiate and get something from Youngkin, which he’ll be happy to provide.

The legislature will ultimately approve the package.

The minority of anti-arena folks in Alexandria and elsewhere in NoVa are delusional if they think their voices are actually going to sway this.

DC and MD residents are a non-factor.

One of WSJ’s daily podcasts just did an episode on the fallout between the city of Santa Clara and the 49ers wrt the NFL stadium; more than the usual broken promises from the team, the 49ers starting throwing money in city elections to support team-friendly council member and mayoral candidates. Thinking of applying that fact pattern to PY would be frightening.

If it gets delayed enough, the teams won't have a place to play for the 2027-2028 season, which would be a problem for Ted.

So I guess Ted becomes the "dan Snyder" local villain now? I swear he backed into his AOL fortune because he clearly isn't very smart or politically savvy.
