Has anyone brought one back to Macy's for a refund? http://www.wusa9.com/news/article/163284/240/Martha-Stewart-Collection-Cast-Iron-Casserole-Recall
What is the consumer's right when it comes to recalls and refunds? I called Macy's earlier because I was going to bring my pot in. I'm not thrilled about the recall but I'm also not thrilled about the idea of the enamel chipping off and burning me. The store clerk was rude and extremely unhelpful, she told me w/out the box (which has the barcode) or the receipt that I would get the lowest selling price that the item has gone for in the past 180 days. Now a few things about that bother me. 1. This is a recall for a possibly defective item, not something I don't want any longer. 2. This is not my fault, this is the manufacturer's error and Macy's error. 3. There are roughly one million units being recalled. I'd like to replace this item. I have no idea what I paid over a year ago, why would I save the receipt for something I planned on keeping. Why should I take a loss on an item that I am essentially being told to return? 4.When I asked if I could just exchange the cast iron pot for the same item if there was one that was not on the recall list I was told I could apply my "credit" to the new item. Why can't I just have the exchange? I thought their were guidelines to recalls and Macy's had to treat this as a recall, not a return w/out a receipt. Am I missing something here? |
I don't know, but thanks for the recall information. I have one in blue and will share whatever I find out. |
According to the recall notice at www.cpsc.gov, you should return it to Macy's for a "full refund." if the clerk is giving you a hassle about it, you should call one of the numbers listed on the recall notice to let them know.

I just took my pot back and was offered credit back to my credit card or a store credit, but no cash refund which was just odd. |
Dammit, I love that pot. ![]() Thanks for the info. I'll try to return mine, I guess. Does anyone have suggestions for a replacement? I love that it's cast iron but still easy to clean, and only cost $50. Alternatively, anyone just going to continue using theirs? CPSC seems to overreact often. I wonder what are the real odds of the enamel chipping. I've been using the hell out of mine for two years with no problems. |
I only used mine twice, and both the lid and pot have chipped. Will be glad to return it. I was irked about the imperfections. |
Macy's told me a new line would be out in a few weeks. |
I'm keeping mine. It's not cracked and I really like it. I guess of new ones come out and they'll exchange it, I'd do that. |
For those of you considering keeping it, please consider these two points -
1. You should not be cooking in it if it's cracked. The enamel can leach poisons into your food the same as non-stick pots. I'd return/exchange a cracked cast iron pot if the enamel was chipped regardless of the recall. Bring it in for a store credit and purchase a new one when they are released, the items wont be even exchangeable per Macy's. 2. When my cast iron pot chipped the enamel popped off like popcorn and flew across the room. It was flaming hot and sharp. Imagine that landing in your eye, hitting your pet, or worse yet your child. The recall was put in place for a reason. I wasn't cut but it did burn me, and again it pops off and flies across the room like popcorn. My advice isn't to risk potentially injuring or burning yourself by keeping an item that's been "recalled" - you are putting yourself in danger by betting your pot won't be the one to explode flaming hot enamel chips. Be safe, not sorry. |
How much did you receive back? |
$68 for the 5.5 quart which I think is probably what I paid after coupons. |
They only wanted to give me $34.99 for my 5.5 qt. |
I just took mine back today. It was a blue 7 quart pot. The box still had a price tag of $159.99 on it. The Manager was not very helpful because I had the pot for over a year and did not have a receipt. I finally had to call the Macy's 800# from the service desk. The store manager listened to the service rep on the other end of the phone briefly and then hung up telling the phone rep "I'll take care of it". The Macy's manager punched some numbers into the register and came back to tell me the last sale price was $99 so that's all they can give me. I took the offered refund since I didn't have a receipt, but I'm sure I paid more than that for the pot. Now I see online that it says you should return the pot to Macy's for a FULL REFUND. Am I out of luck here? Does anyone have any suggestions? |
Don't know. Call the 800 # and ask. Write Marth, too. Let us know what she says. |
50 dollars?? my pot was 99 dollars and that was on sale..
I will be bringing mine back tomorrow, I should be credited 99 dollars right?.. |
