Private & Independent Schools

Don't flame! I'm not just saying that - he has been tested, etc. His older sister is bright but not gifted. She is in a private school that she enjoys very much, but it seems to focus a bit much on athletics, and ds has physical limitations that will hamper him.
We are trying to figure out where to send him to Kindergarten. We want the school that is right for him, even if it means not going to the same school as his sister. Any ideas? TIA. |
| How gifted is he? Not being snarky, but the answers will depend on what his needs really are. Do you know what his score was on the IQ test and which test? |
| And where do you live? |
| Sidwell. Beauvoir. GDS. |
| Sadly, there are very few choices for truly gifted children. None of the schools listed above differentiate. For run-of-the-mill smart kids (10%-ile), they are fine. But you will probably need to really push/work with the teachers and administration of any school to get work that will really challenge your child. |
| The upshot of several threads on related subjects seems to be that MCPS can be an excellent choice for gifted children. |
| We're trying a Montgomery County public school. At least they have gifted programs! (http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/enriched/) We'll let you know how it turns out! |
I am assuming you are not OP. May I ask what your dc's IQ score was? Just trying to get a sense of things and this information is helpful, imo. Thanks! |
| Where has dc been in preschool to date? |
| Almost all the kids in the elite private schools test into the gifted range. |
Exactly!! |
Oh, I am well aware of that. My dd's score was in the 130s, which is technically gifted, and she is in an "elite" private school. I called her bright vs. gifted in my original post because I don't consider that to be such a stand-out score vis-a-vis the private school population. It is high enough that she should do well without being ostracized. My ds's score is in the 150s (WPPSI, however, which I think starts to lose accuracy at that point?). I believe that puts him into "brainiac" territory, even given the demographics of this area. What we haven't explored yet is his preschool teachers' opinion that he is highly gifted musically. They say he can remember any tune after hearing it once, which may be true. I just don't know what - if any - test exists for that. So, IQ that puts him in the top tenth of 1% (potentially - who knows how much IQ matters) and decreased emphasis on athleticism, if possible. Where would you send him? |

Edlin School in Reston is supposed to be excellent.
http://www.edlinschool.com/ I've heard mixed things about Nysmith. People seem to like it for early childhood and early elementary, but not as much after that. |
| Just wondering. Are you and DH super high IQ as well? |
|
Mine is 138. I suspect DH's is higher, but he has no idea.
I have also heard mixed things about Nysmith. |
