Bobby Flay was on CNN talking about how restaurants are doing and that this reflects the true state of the economy. Prices for supplies going up and people having less money to spend on restaurants, particularly as they charge more money to make up for the increase in costs.

Just because there was some government spending and export of weapons to Ukraine, both of which increase the GDP number, does not make the economy strong. Consumer spending and business investment were -.6% in the GDP number.

Restaurants are a luxury, not a necessity.

They also employ a lot of Americans

Who are paid terribly by the owners.

Start a business and pay them whatever you want.

Why should I? I have a good job. I don’t go to restaurants because I don’t see the value anymore.

I'm sure a local Republican dogcatcher or two on the ballot are decent people. At the state and federal level, however, Republicans have chipped away at the decency and democratic norms that have historically underpinned our country. It is not a both sides problem. It is 100% on Republicans.

As someone who grew up in the a very Deep South MAGA enclave, I do believe that the way my folks view society and the world is different. And you can call it crazy and you are probably correct. I didn’t realize how different the rest of the country is until I went to college in the northeast. My roommate in college was from Africa and what I found strange was that I was culturally closer to him than many of my other college classmates from the northeast. Anyways I don’t know where we are headed as a country but I don’t know if we are actually all meant to be in the same country. My folks back home are truly crazy. But those folks think I am the Crazy one now.

On Tuesday we will find out. If we are the silent majority (dems) then why how is it possible that election deniers will be elected? I’m really confused…

I think they will be elected because we do not have social safety nets in America. Economy is always the #1 issue. So the strategy of scaring people that the economy is horrible and then a recession is coming will always work. As long as folks don’t have decent healcare, descent wages, affordable housing, etc you can call them MAGA nuts, crazies all you want they will ALWAYS go for the candidate who TRICK them into thinking that he has the answers to their economic suffering.

100% this. And in my humble opinion this is why the strategy by democrats to emphasize that democracy is on the line was doomed to begin with. I saw on CNBC the other day that 63% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and honestly I was stunned. And also do people really know the meaning of democracy? While it is a simple concept to many people it’s abstract. We are an individualist society and we are so busy with our lives that the entire neighborhood could be burning but as long as our house is not we will go to bed like nothing is happening….

The average voter doesn't have the capacity to keep up with current events, contextualize them, or analyze local, national, and global trends. They'll gladly trade something abstract like democracy for something salient like gas prices that are a nickel cheaper.

Some people think that Dems don’t know how to talk to voters about kitchen table issues and that they put too much emphasize on cultural topics that don’t even affect the vast majority of Americans. But I think that’s just another GOP playbook defining Dems this way.

Your entire post is spot on, but I wanted to highlight this in particular. It's really disappointing that Democrats have allowed Republicans to create and run with this narrative, when Republicans have absolutely nothing to offer voters besides contrived culture war wedge issues (trans agenda!! CRT!! grooming!!).

I would argue that Democrats are actually pretty great at explaining their take on the actual issues; listen to Liz Warren explain literally any of her policies, or for a more lightning rod take, listen to AOC. Listen to Katie Porter, or Swalwell or just about any Democrat. They’re clear, they’re concise, they explain how the Democrats will help people.

It just get drowned out the bullsht hose that the GOP floods the zone with.
