FCPS is turning the new high school purchased to fix crowding into an Aviation magnet school instead of a high school??

I’m surprised they even published option C. Yes, Navy has a reputation for being outspoken, but I think in this case, the Navy cutout is from them realizing that Option C brought them too close to their 2200 capacity cap and they needed to trim the student count.

Options A and D seem like the only viable options. I think it’ll be something between those two scenarios. I can’t see Meren giving up that much of South Lakes in Option D, but I also doubt NONE of SL will go to KAA as proposed in Option A.

It seems to me that Option A would be best--but they should include all of Floris.

Option D is kind of mean to Discovery Square. They would be the only neighborhood on the north side of 50 going to Westfield-and that would be pretty isolating. And, it is (along with Chantilly Highlands and Highland Mews) the closest neighborhood to KAA. It is just over one mile.

Agreed. Option A is exactly what I was anticipating based on Reid and the school board’s comments, but given the remaining capacity, sending all of Floris instead of only the Westfield portion seems like a no brainer.

I think “A” with the Floris SLHS cutout moved is possibly the compromise, but I’m betting the concern on that is then it’s an ugly SLHS split feeder at Carson. Guessing they’re tying Fox Mill ES and the Floris SLHS as a package deal.

Is there room for Fox Mill at Hughes?

Not sure, but even if there was I seriously doubt Fox Mill families would not fight tooth and nail to stop a move from Carson to Hughes.

Option A cuts out a small portion of Floris and keeps them at SLHS. Why not have them at KAA? They are significantly closer. It doesn’t make sense to isolate those few neighborhoods.

Whenever you see something in a boundary that doesn't make sense, its someone pulling strings behind the scenes.

When Herndon AAP transfers go back to their base middle school, Hughes may have enough room. When Carson MS sends their AAP transfers back to Franklin, there should be enough room to absorb Oak Hill, even if Fox Mill stays. I can see it going either way.

I would definitely be fighting this move. My kids are walking distance to Carson (one mile), much closer than many other students going there.

Whenever you see something in a boundary that doesn't make sense, its someone pulling strings behind the scenes.

Discovery Square- Floris ES- is across Mclearen RD. You can walk about 1 mile or less and end up at Carson or Western HS. Last residential outpost in the Floris boundary? Spreadsheeting the options have Centreville and almost Chantilly as constants. So start there with the maximum out for Chantilly and Westfield:
Chantilly=-698 =Westfield 340 + Western 358. Est 84% with the modular and 96% without.
Centreville=-362 Westfield. Est 92% with the modular and 99% without. Addition scale back since FCPS can't get the permits anyway. 381m CIP
Westfield=-1005= Western 1005 [diff was 65 for Floris Discovery square near Carson/WHS]. Westfield is 86% no modular.

Western HS at 1363 core start projected membership. From that point FCPS school board members can duke it out on what happens with Oakton and South Lakes on anywhere from 400-600 estimated open seats at the new Western HS.

I think it’s ridiculous to have a small island in Franklin Farm that attends Oakton while the rest of the neighborhood on both sides of the parkway attends the new high school. There has to be a better solution than that. Boundary decisions need to be made for the long-term not for vocal parents whose kids will be affected within one to two years. Give those families a choice, can even make them provide their own transportation, and then stick to a long-term plan that makes the most sense.

Franklin Farm students are closer to Franklin Middle School than Carson. There's more room at Franklin than Carson. They should move Crossfield/Franklin Farm to Franklin MS and have them remain at Oakton.

It’s crazy that in options a, they keep sending small part of floris kids to south lakes. They waited many years and finally got a high school close to their home. I don’t understand why that part of floris kids are carved out. I am going to fight against that specific part.

If Crossfield doesn’t end up at KAA, I think that’s exactly what they will do. Allows them to form a cohort with the Navy kids at Franklin. Also opens up space at Carson for Oak Hill.

Coild someoen explain why meren would care if one neighborhood goes to SLHS instead of new Western HS?

Why don't any of these options have some of the neighborhoods in the western part of Fairfax HS that are so close to Centreville HS moving there?

Is there room for Crossfield at Franklin without moving Oak Hill to Carson? How much of Oak Hill goes to Carson now?

The solution is to move that Navy island to Crossfield. This brings some more diversity to Crossfield Gen ED, and the AAP kids can remain at Navy for AAP.

Only AAP. They need to move Oak Hill to Carson and Crossfield to Franklin so that they end up at high school with their friends.
