FCPS is turning the new high school purchased to fix crowding into an Aviation magnet school instead of a high school??

100% agree.

Meren wouldn’t want to let go of that part of Floris and Fox Mill because it’s affluent/UMC, and South Lakes “reputation” would take a hit.

Because those are affluent neighborhoods FHS wants to keep and they are already pulling the poorest areas out of cvhs to send to westfield. So cvhs would end up way more affluent in your scenario then the surrounding schools.

If Crossfield doesn’t end up at KAA, I think that’s exactly what they will do. Allows them to form a cohort with the Navy kids at Franklin. Also opens up space at Carson for Oak Hill.

Is there room for Crossfield at Franklin without moving Oak Hill to Carson? How much of Oak Hill goes to Carson now?

The Emerald Chase neighborhood (17% of Oak Hill) goes to Carson plus a bunch of kids go there for the AAP Center.

Am I correct that the only difference between option C and D is the stupid Navy Island in Franklin Farm?

I think C and D are the best solutions - Fox Mill and Crossfield should go to the new high school. Otherwise it will be like 50% FARMS.

Remember the South Lakes boundary change. SLHS received students from Westfield, Oakton, and Madison. And only 18 were transferring in for IB as opposed to the 164 SY2024-25 from Herndon.

2008 moved Wolftrap's Madison island. For all anyone knows Meren could try moving the remaining Westbriar/Marshall Island to Sunrise Valley/South Lakes. Also piece of Colvin Run with same access road as Forest Edge development [newer and more expensive].

So if Meren gets some moved out she has places to pull from...Scenario 4 has Oakton ES at 104% and Sunrise Valley at 80%.

I’m still curious about the grounds for KAA. Is there enough room for a football stadium? Baseball diamond? Will there be sports teams year 1 and 2?

There are other high schools with similarly small acreages. Plus, Carson is close and they can use some of those fields.

That part of Floris has to be kept at South Lakes as a shrine to Stu Gibson's asshattery.

I don't really know whether Melanie Meren would intervene to the extent some are suggesting here, but even if she did query whether she'd get the same deference that Elaine Tholen got in 2021, when Tholen waited until the last minute to swap the Tysons apartments that FCPS staff had proposed to move from McLean to Langley with expensive single-family homes in Vienna. Tholen did that in the middle of Covid when the board wasn't meeting in person and the board members were tired and distracted by all the criticism FCPS was facing for its response to Covid.

Obviously, there's a history of SB members deferring to the magisterial member for changes in their district, and we've seen what Sandy Anderson is apparently trying to do now with Rolling Valley, but there are exceptions. FCPS redistricted Annandale HS neighborhoods to Woodson and Edison in 2011 over the objections of Sandy Evans, the Mason District member, and they also eliminated a Woodson attendance island in the middle of the Robinson district against the wishes of the then-Braddock and Springfield representatives (Megan McLaughlin and Elizabeth Schultz).

Meren did say at one of the meetings (work session?) something like her constituents are very interested in staying together and don't like the split feeder situation.

Seems to me, that they should send Fox Mill to Hughes.

It has a soccer field with a track around it that has a small set of bleachers on one side. I suspect they will expand that to be the main field for the school. There is enough land that could be developed to add additional fields plus as others have said I imagine they will leverage what’s at Carson already and potentially upgrade those for baseball and softball. I do think the school is going to need to add parking as 407 spots will not be enough for a school with 2000 kids and all the needs for staff parking.

Eyeballing it, there is plenty of room for a stadium. Especially since they also have access to Carson fields for practice, etc. KAA already has a number of soccer fields.

Go look at a satellite view of the space.

Only AAP. They need to move Oak Hill to Carson and Crossfield to Franklin so that they end up at high school with their friends.

Oak Hill has a LOT of kids already at Carson for AAP. My guess would be close to half--hard to tell since they also have kids from Fox Mill and Lees Corner at the center.

I’m confused why they didn’t give an option where all of Floris went to KAA and Fox Mill stayed at South Lakes. Under Option B, Crossfield is the only Carson school not going to KAA, so it’s not to balance the split feeder (Crossfield has fewer students than Fox Mill.)

The assumption being that the absence of MS and ES maps means there won’t be changes at those levels. Oak Hill and Crossfield could ostensibly swap middle schools under Option B so that all of Carson feed KAA and Franklin split between Chantilly/Oakton (and, inexplicably Westfield if they never close that south of 50 split…) But under Option A, Fox Mill would not fit at Hughes at this time, so the KAA/South Lakes split couldn’t be closed.

They really need to release MS maps too.
