which school?

are these kids completely shut out? As in they have no acceptances?

Shut out as in not a single kid that applied was accepted to certain schools.

That really depends on who applied though. Top student at our school get in ED to UPenn. They probably would have gotten into other Ivies but didn't apply. So maybe shut out schools didn't have top students apply.

Yes, it feels like a lot of kids and families way over-shoot their shot. My kid is at NCS and about 10% of the class has the grades for a top 20 school and yet half of the junior class is visiting them. If there are shut-outs it's because lots of kids apply to schools they have no business applying to (based on past results from the school)

Sorry to break it to you but there will be several kids that get into top 20 schools that don’t have the gpa you think they need. It’s not as definitive as you may think.

Of course there are hooked kids but the GPA lines for the unhooked are surprisingly definite--I really thought there would be more variation based on things like extracurriculars and essays. My kid is not at NCS but we've met with college counseling at another school and have seen admission data on a number of schools.

There are variables. Like two students with the same gpa, but different level of rigor, have very different results. BUT - you are absolutely correct to be realistic and cast a wide net.

After seeing their page I have lost all respect for the DC privates. They just pretend to be competitive but it’s the NY private schools that really give your children an education worth the hefty tuition.

Ivy admits posted so far:

Spence: 18
GDS: 14
Sidwell: 13
Potomac: 11

Spence’s numbers are certainly impressive, but so are the other schools. As far as we know, that may be all of Spence’s Ivy admits, and the other schools may have 5-10 students who haven’t posted. The data is incomplete, but congratulations to all of these students!

Riverdale: 29. Goodnight!

But Riverdale has serious celebrity kids (Tom Brady and Seinfeld both have kids there, right?) and NYC money. Not really comparable to DC schools that have maybe a Supreme Court Justice kid or a national news anchor kid. Come on .

NYC has 8 million people. DC has 500,000. You are comparing apples with oranges. They are selecting kids with parents and connections on all of the college boards. You can't have true DEI and have that. Need to pick a lane. If you fill up your classes with only connected families then we would have the same here. Thankfully some of the DC schools are actually admitting kids who do not have connections and are just outstanding applicants.

Good for them! Why should they subject themselves to nosy people who do not know them and share in their joy? Personally I think all schools should keep them private. There is no need for anyone to know where kids are going except their friends, family, and school community.

Totally understand this sentiment. However I DO share their joy! Love that school and have been so impressed with their recent outcomes. So, nosey - yes; I’ll intent? No.

If Spence moves to DC, then your comment will be relevant. AOs aren’t comparing Spence (or any NYC school students) to DC students. Are you similarly concerned about what’s happening at private schools in Seattle and Atlanta? This is DCUM, and we’re in DC.

P.S. It’s clear that your children attend public school. Thus, you have bigger issues to worry about than private school business.

I have kids in private and think that the DC area (both private & public) has relatively poor college outcomes compared to other areas.

The colleges you call "poor" are great. And beyond that, the people who graduate from them do just as well in life as any other graduate from any other school, if they all do what they need to do. You really must live in a tiny bubble if you don't now any wealthy or otherwise successful people who went to schools outside of the top 100.

Looking through this, I found the following results from our K-8 class of 2020 (now the class of 2024 for high school):

Stanford, Northwestern (2), Chicago (1), Washington U in St. Louis (1), Georgetown (1), University of Missouri (1), Villanova (1) (sport)

Obviously, it's not the full result, but it's a decent showing. The whole class was probably around 24 kids. This is a good testament for the k-8 model. The results above are from about 5 different high schools.

DP. You definitely went to the poor colleges you have in mind because PP wasn’t calling the schools poor rather the outcomes and acceptances.
