The DC Council Committee of the Whole announced a Public Oversight Roundtable on the Re-Opening District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and District of Columbia Public Charter Schools (DCPCS) for School Year 2021-2022

The number of public witnesses will be limited to 50 individuals. Sign-up NOW. We hope to flood the hearing with Educator Voices. Those who wish to testify must register at http://www.ChairmanMendelson.com/testify by the close of business on Tuesday, July 20, 2021.

The WTU will be sending out further information and updates on our negotiations with DCPS on the return to school in the coming days.

Yes. Before you all flip the teachers testifying will be saying they want mandatory masks for all

who is going to testify about getting rid of outdoor masks? can teachers stop being so freakin’ selfish for a second?

Who is talking about outdoor masks? And let’s be honest by October mandatory masks in all indoor establishments will be back. Just look at LA

right, who is talking about outdoor masks? my point exactly. if the teachers weren’t selfish they would advocate to get rid out outdoor masks. but generally outdoor masks only impact kids and non-WTU staff who monitor recess/aftercare.

I’m a teacher and I have recess duty everyday. Not sure what school your kids go to that teachers don’t have recess duty. Anyway, I don’t give a flip about outdoor masks. You wanna fight this fight…go for it. I don’t care enough to do it.

right, you don’t care about it. selfish.

I guess you can call me selfish if it makes you feel better. Why don’t you advocate for it? Why would I advocate for something I don’t care about?

Because you are asking for our support on things you do care about and we don't have a voice on this issue. It's in your own self-interest.

You must have me confused with another teacher poster here. I do not expect parents to ever advocate for anything that I want. I don’t ask parents to support anything beyond their child’s education. That’s not the parents job.

Sure you do. cough teacher pay cough

Nope. I make enough money for the hours and days that I work. Not every teacher is complaining about pay etc.

Why do you think you make that much? DC teacher's salaries are way above the norm. It's the highest starting salary in the country. Who do you think allowed that to happen?

The DC government, which realized that they need some sort of financial incentives to recruit teachers to the district. Lol at "allowed that to happen" tho

Lord really, you are supposed to be a teacher. Might want to brush up on your civics and the interplay between policy, taxes and voting.

Please, tell me more how the W3 parents are the financial saviors of the "teaching class"

Who said anything about Ward 3? Y'all claimed that teachers never ask for parental support on policy issues. I merely pointed out that that's a gigantic delusion.

Bolded where it seemed you were having trouble. Someone brought up teacher salaries and I explained why they were at their current rate. Not seeing the connection to larger policy decisions or how your unconditional generosity allows me to live in my apartment and teach your DC. Thank you so much for your altruism

How can you blanket say this when there are so many breakthrough cases in vaccinated adults. I know we all know of people who work in officers, etc.
it is naive to think a vaccinated teacher would never test positive.

Nothing on there about Ward 3. Hope you're not an ELA teacher.

I never said anything about altruism. . I said teachers ask for parental support on policy amd workplace issues, such as salaries, all the time. Fact is one of us here thinks we're a community of interest and it's not you.

+1

NP who is a teacher. I am well compensated and never ask parents to advocate for me. I am a professional adult. I think asking parents to help conditions at my job would be awkward and inappropriate.

Of course you do. Don't be naive.

No I don’t. But you really seem to think you are high and mighty on this thread.

NP. Teachers sure asked for a lot of help from parents with doing their jobs for the past year…

NP: Yes, during a global pandemic that nobody was prepared for and completely changed the way educational services were delivered, we asked for support

And now that we are asking for your support on really small issues, like unmasking outside, your colleagues are telling us to eff off and that they never ask for support.

A vaccinated teacher has far less risk of getting and spreading covid than an unvaccinated teacher.

Please don't be so dumb as to suggest that because breakthrough cases exist, that vaccination is useless.

Think you may have misread that teachers post/tone. Teachers have very little say in what goes on procedurally. At my school, when we try to offer ideas or suggestions, our admin often sees it as disrespect (which is why so many left this year). Parents probably don’t see this part, but it’s really not something that we have control over.

I don't think I misinterpreted their tone, especially in light of the follow ups, but I do appreciate and understand your response/explanation. I am sorry to hear about what seems like bad management practices at your school. I hope it's not widespread but suspect it is. We are all frustrated about policies being implemented from the top down and the lack.of information being shared.
