Who said there was? We're talking about football in 2021, not WWII. Opening up a historical Pandora's box with regard to sporting events is a futile exercise. The British Empire has quite a lot of blood on its hands, too; there are no good guys there either, just more or less recent bad guys. I hate England because of England fans and English sports media, not because I have a soft spot for Benito Mussolini, nor do I hold the 2021 Italian soccer team responsible for what their great-grandparents may or may not have been involved in 80 years ago. Or Toni Kroos responsible for his dead relatives, or Alvaro Morata as a reflection of Francisco Franco, or anybody else. Historical rabbit holes just don't work in sports.

There are actual comments like “Yay! Indigenous peoples best the evil colonialists!” in this thread.

That’s because most racism is towards wypipo

“Too nervous to take penalty” big not too nervous to play in Euros final? Hmm

I would love to know where stadium security was when these Italian fans were being beaten up. I thought it was standard practice for away fans to be escorted out at the end of matches like these. I certainly remember Brazilian officials protecting German fans in an organized fashion after the 7-1 semifinal thrashing of Brazil in 2014, having them remain in their seats at the end and escorting them out in groups. Epic fail by Wembley organizers; also people were apparently roaming around inside without tickets.

More upset about that or the government forcing them to stay home?

I don’t even think that many countries wanted England to win

Bonucci was asked if he really did shout "It's coming to Rome" into the cameras, a dig at the ubiquitous "Football's coming home" song favoured by the English.

"Absolutely, yes," he exclaimed. "We've been hearing that since Wednesday night, when they beat Denmark to reach the final. Sorry for them, but it's going somewhere else. It's getting on a big plane and going to Rome. We believed in this, we earned it and now it's right that we celebrate."

Viva l’Italia!

Whoever made this map is crazy. Nobody in Scotland wants England to win. The phrase used in Scotland is ABE, anyone but England!

The best portrayal of Italian athletes I've ever seen was of the Italian cyclists in "Breaking Away." I guess people can hate on England, but loving the Italian squad is a heavy lift, too.

Datapoint of one, but my Scottish buddy was absolutely hating on the England supporters at the bar where he was watching the match. He's got no love for Italy, but gigging English people is good sport for him.

I love the “don’t criticize three players to miss a penalty”. They’re professionals. Not criticizing them is the bigotry of low expectations

There is criticizing and there's heaping racist abuse. The latter is disgusting and needs to be better monitored on social media platforms.

With that said, three missed PKs didn't lose the game. What's worse, even if 19 year old Saka had made his penalty, England still would not have been guaranteed a win. They would have continued with penalties.

The real failure was England's failure to score a goal in the 120 plus minutes of play before penalties. Criticize that.

Big failure indeed. I used to live in London. They have matches every weekend (local teams) and they are used to handling crowd control and rowdy fans. They probably handle hooligans better than any country out there. They just didn't deploy their expertise this time it seems.

They are literally saying “oh but they were nervous be proud of them for evening trying”. No.

THREE MISSED PENALTIES. Criticize cause they were poor penalties. Poor decision to give it to them over Grealish, Stones, Sterling. AND. Poor penalty.
