But this is true of tons of people who don’t encourage others to take their lives.

Actually Twitter was a dumpster fire. People keep getting canceled for their past tweets.

I’ve been on Twitter since it first became popular. I don’t recall ever seeing many tweets encouraging others to kill themselves. And the nastiest tweets are almost always from anonymous randos. This has never been normal or acceptable behavior even on Twitter.

I think Teigan felt empowered to be nasty because she was young and beautiful and starting to get positive attention in the industry, and she had probably observed that being “the hot girl” often affords some women a lot of leeway in their behavior. I sometimes wonder if women who do stuff like this are testing their powers. Like if you can tell some child on Twitter to kill herself and no one says anything, that’s how you know you’re really pretty and popular.

I remember this dynamic from when I was younger. Sometimes the pretty, mean girls would get this gleam in their eye, like “I wonder if anyone is going to call me on this because I know I’m being terrible!” And then if no one did, or even better, if someone called them out and people rushed to her defense: triumph.

It is a really, really upsetting dynamic and as someone who has been bullied in a similar way, it feels absolutely devastating. Because it’s not just whatever the mean girl is saying about you. It’s all the people standing around agreeing, or at least not intervening. It’s essentially being shamed and shunned and you feel completely powerless and it can absolutely make you contemplate suicide. I started self-harming when it happened to me.

It’s really harmful behavior. Teigan should hold herself accountable, especially knowing what she knows now about mental health (and having experienced online bullying herself).

+1. Interesting perspective that I hadn’t really thought about.

agree

Agree too. Thanks PP above for sharing that. I relate. I was bullied as a young adult by a woman who was widely seen by our peers as beautiful and “cool”. She was vicious. What was so hurtful wasn’t the terrible things she said, which included threats against me, but that so many people stood by and watched and said nothing.

I guess Chrissy isn't too worried...look who hired Splash News to pap shoot her and her family at Disneyland? She's such a great Mom!

NP, I’m sorry you went through that. It sounds really frustrating.

Teagan should be ashamed of herself.

What a joke. Don’t want the crowds then go during the weekend, Chrissy. She’s scum.

Anonymous wrote:It’s nice that she tweeted a mea culpa but I still can’t believe she did that stuff. What kind of grown adult messages other people to kill themselves?? And I’m not a fan of the Stodden person, but she was practically a child.

She was not practically a child, she was a child.

Anonymous wrote:The comments were horrible, Chrissy sucks and her actions and language are indefensible, but can Courtney Stodden just go away? I hate when people bring up stuff that happened 10+ years ago just because they want to be back in the news again. It's just a waste of everyone's time.

Agree.

Courtney was a very troubled, exploited teenager then and didn't have the ability to bring it up back then. Now Chrissy is complaining about being attacked on the internet and it's obviously going to piss off Courtney.

Objection overruled.

I remember when Courtney was all over the media and people were pretty ruthless. She was on Jezebel quite a lot and I just did a search and saw she was talking about bullying back then, including someone telling her to kill herself, it may have been Chrissy, though I wouldn't be surprised if there were others.

There were definitely others. However, randos won’t give her the boost in the media she wants.

What is your deal? Why are you supporting a bully and mean spirited person who attacks children? You should be appalled. It's curious you aren't.

What is your deal? Realizing people have numerous motives and don’t fit into a neat box is life. Courtney isn’t a child anymore. She very much has made it clear she wants to be famous. No one is excusing Chrissy bc what she said was uncalled for. I am appalled at both of these women. It’s curious you aren’t.

Got it. You are victim blaming. Courtney isn’t pure enough to warrant empathy.

Call it whatever you want. Courtney doesn’t warrant much sympathy from a lot of people bc it’s pretty clear she wants fame. Don’t go for Reddit or Twitter. You might break your pearls clutching them so hard.

She wants fame?? Oh my god!! How terrible and unusual!!

It’s not unusual which is why the only ppl who seem to care is DCUM posters. It hilarious to see the responses here and other sites.

Not just here. Not by a very long shot.

Is any of this going to impact Legend? His brand should take a hit as well.

I hope so. He's obviously not a nice dude since he's married to her, and I've thought that for a long time

How is he not a nice person? People can be married to unkind people and not be unkind themselves. Also, didn’t this happen before he and Chrissy were married?

Was a fan of Chrissy’s until hearing how she treated Stodden. As a woman and a parent I cannot fathom how an adult tells anyone - let alone a vulnerable child - to kill themselves. It’s inexcusable. And no matter what you think of Stodden, she was a child at that time and nothing makes it ok that she was treated that way.

His power has enabled her to go on these tirades. Stodden is not the only one she did this two- there are plenty of others, mostly young girls, she viciously went after. Just like we all sideeye harvey Weinstein's wife, who likely was aware of his predatory relationships, we also have to sideeye John Legend because he was surely aware on some level too. It's not like she hid her personality

Blind gossip suggests more young victims and at least one more may come forward. I do think less of John Legend because he cared about her face and body much more than he cared about her heart and mind.

This. He started dating Chrissy in 2006. He knew and knows who his wife is.

Teigan has always been really judgmental and kind of mean on Twitter. I'm surprised that people are surprised to hear about these comments. This was her Twitter "brand" for years.

I think one thing that happened is that Trump got elected and people like Teigan who used to tweet nasty things about Lindsay Lohan or Stodden or whoever the "young woman of scorn" of the week was (see also: Perez Hilton, Billy Eichner, anyone associated with E!, etc.), instead started tweeting earnestly about immigration policy. Plus their nastiness got channeled toward Trump, who actually deserved it, so it became easy to rally around these celebs and a bunch of people turned them into avatars for the progressive movement, which was dumb. But it just doesn't seem nasty when people say awful things about Trump or his family because they are vile, so it doesn't occur to people that it actually takes a certain kind of personality to tweet nasty things about other people, even someone as dangerous and awful as Trump.

Now Trump is out of the public eye and there's a bit of a reckoning about the level of gossip, meanness, and misogyny of that era. Look at how Perez Hilton and others have had to make their mea culpas over what they said about Britney back then. The Trump era has woken a lot of people up to the idea that just spewing ugly meanness about people who are struggling is horrible behavior, especially because so often the person being targeted is a young woman who is struggling with body image issues, mental health, potentially even abuse. But this was so common as recently as like 2014. And Teigan was of course a part of it.

It's cute how many people think being part of the #Resistance somehow absolves them of being dicks for years and years. I'm glad to see that some of them are being called on it finally. We are long overdue.
