Has the composition of the 7 person board of the Usps been discussed yet? https://about.usps.com/who/leadership/board-governors/

All Trump appointees.
All old.
All men.
6 white, 1 Hispanic

No wonder things have gotten so politicized there...

Bernie Sanders blocked Obama from nominating anyone to the board for years.

I know not everyone has this option, but this is why I'm voting in person. I already had covid and I'm not taking chances with my vote.

Except they want people to vote in person because with the electronic machines, the votes cannot have a paper trail. That is why mail-in is so important. The Trump campaign is sending out mailers encouraging its voters to vote absentee.

Always remember when someone is claiming “both sides” that it’s not both sides, it’s the GOP.

PP here, I am not in favor of 100% vote by mail. Mail is inherently an insecure and unreliable service. *REGISTERED* mail was implemented as a secure and reliable service - registered mail is stored in locked cages with a signature based chain of custody. This is why when you send something registered they put a bunch of stamps all over the envelope's seals, to prevent/detect people messing with the mail. But because of this chain-of-custody requirement, registered mail is hand sorted and not machine sorted. I would assume that a registered mail level of service is what would be necessary for 100% mailed ballots.

Taxes
Passports
Drivers Licenses
Social Security Cards
Social Security Checks
Government Pension Checks
Bank Chacks

- all things sent routinely by the public and government without being registered mail

Sure, but people mail these at their own risk.

Taxes - many people mail their returns with certified or registered mail, for the specific reason that a lost return would result in a tax penalty.
Passports - only mailed for non-urgent renewals. Those that want their passport on time get them in person.
Drivers Licenses - again, you can get them in person if you must have them. Lost licenses are not as big of a deal.
Social Security Cards - a lost car is no big deal, you just get a replacement.
Social Security Checks, Pension Checks, Bank Checks - lost checks can be replaced/reissued. Note that a lot of businesses use FedEx letter to mail check payments on invoices for key suppliers precisely to ensure that it gets delivered.

So all of the examples you supplied, either already has a high level of use of certified/registered mail services, or does not matter if they are lost or are late.

I do most of the things on the list and have never once sent or received a certified letter.

Leave it up to a Democrat to think that your personal experience is representative of the broad population.

Are you stupid? Supporting the efforts to realign USPS to be more efficient at handling packages by reducing under-utilized flat/letter sorting machines is literally supporting the USPS.

You guys who wants the USPS to keep holding on to these machines are the ones who are setting up the USPS for failure. You guys want the USPS to fail so that you can tax people to pay for the USPS.

Anonymous wrote:Reality is, nobody's talking about "destroying" the post office, except those engaging in hyperbole & histrionics. The USPS has been scaling back for years. Snail mail is going the way of the land line telephone. It's called progress. Now, some have decided we absolutely MUST conduct our voting by mail -- as if we cannot safely go to a polling place & vote. We go out, and with appropriate caution, go to grocery stores, pharmacies, attend political rallies & protests, go to home supply stores, liquor stores, gun shops, beauty salons & barber shops, physician & dentist offices, etc., etc. Those with special needs: absentee ballots have been available since the Civil War. But the screeching & screaming will continue, as if the nation's very existence depends on mail-in voting.

Are you actually trying to claim that postal service has not been impacted by these moves and that the timing is completely coincidental? Despite, Trump himself explicitly saying that he is trying to slow down the mail because he thinks mail in voting is bad for his re-election chances?

Are you really also saying that we should vote in person only? If so, why? It's one thing to say that in person voting can be done safely. It's quite another thing to say that we must vote in person regardless of safety. Unfortunately, that second point is what you are actually arguing. Sure, there are steps that can be taken to make in person voting as safe as going to the grocery store. Even that's not close to 100% safe but whatev. But what's happening is that some states want to minimize potential safety risks and the federal government is trying to sabotage that effort.

No, PP is saying that it's the height of stupidity to push for mail-in-voting 2.5 months out from a Presidential election. If Democrats wanted safe, secure mail-in voting, they should have taken it up as an issue back when they had the Presidency and Congress. They didn't. As such, you can't whine about it now. Well, you can whine, but the rest of us won't care.

PPP here, and yes - this is exactly what I'm saying. Also, if Democrats are so damn worried about the USPS not getting their ballots in on time, then why don't they send them in now? Why wait until the last minute? And if they're THAT scared, then just vote in person - the same way they go to the grocery store or hair salon right now. Or protests, for that matter. Such hypocrites.

You do realize that there is as least one Virginian who has requested a mail-in ballot, not received one, received delayed mail, and not stepped foot in a grocery store for months on end?

You do realize how many tradesmen are out of work right now?

Your argument is what exactly? Be specific.

The “conservative” argument is basically that we aren’t entitled to safe or free and fair elections and we just better deal with it.

Fair elections, sure, but safe? Where in the constitution does it state that citizens are entitled to domestic safety provided by the federal government?

God you are stupid. Mail in voting is the least secure, most susceptible to fraud. Do you not want a legitimate election?
Oh, but you don’t, because when Trump wins you need an excuse, however fictional, to claim election fraud, racism, voter suppression. I see you.
