If you need guts to say it and feels ashamed to say you believe something, that’s your first clue it’s maybe a wrong thing to believe.

Let me introduce you to the internet, where you can be subject to a mob attack for any reason or sometimes no reason, but it's always an unpleasant experience.

If you feel you would be attacked for saying it out loud, again, question if it’s a belief worth holding.

By your logic, should anti-racists sit back and keep quiet in racist parts of the country if they fear attack?

Who fears being attacked for NOT being a racist?

People who menstruate include women and trans men. That wasn't difficult or confusing.

In other words, women.

You do realize you have a choice, right? You don't have to be so vile and hateful. You could just choose to be kind.

Original pp ohhh now I get it because men have an X chrom they think they can menstruated as a trans? Are you serious? that’s the argument? When I see a trans man with a period then you can try to make a point. this is lunacy!!!!! Trans men do not have a period and cannot get pregnant. They are not women end of story.

Some trans men can and do.

In any case, don’t align a position of bigotry (transphobia) with one being anti bigotry (anti racism). One singles out groups to hate, the other does not. They’re not equivalent.

THIS

It doesn't. I think JKR is dumb to make this about the bathrooms. I don't care about trans people advocating for rights at all. They should! They should absolutely do that and feminists should support them as an intersectional partner for advocating for equality.

Changing language so women don't exist is the issue. And it is an issue that trans people would I assume not like either, as they would then not have language to describe their own vision of their gender.

I think you would do well to reframe your analysis here. No one is changing language so that women don't exist. Women exist, but not everyone who menstruates is a woman, and not all women menstruate.

I'm using the menstruation example because it is what set Rowling off this time. You can say that women exist, and you can say that some men menstruate. Neither invalidates the other.

You can also say women menstruate, just like JKR did. It is a true statement and doesn't negate the fact that some trans men menstruate, or that some women don't menstruate. Saying that women menstruate shouldn't be controversial. just like saying that women get breast cancer shouldn't be controversial and doesn't negate the fact that men can get it too.

The issue is JK said they only term for people who menstruate should be “women.” This is a fallacy because many women don’t even menstruate, and trans men still menstruate and gender non binary people menstruate. So no, menstruation = woman is false.

If you are female, and you don’t menstruate, it’s because there is a problem. The female body is supposed to menstruate for purposes of reproduction.

Have you ever heard of menopause? Are you saying that after menopause one is no longer a woman since they no longer menstruate?

This only reveals how little most of you understand about trans people. You can be a trans man and still menstruate. Many do because undergoing hysterectomy and a sex change operation is onerous and expensive and a personal choice. There are many trans men who still menstruate.

Talk about an argument that can be used against both sides of the river

No, she didn't. Saying that women menstruate is still a true statement and doesn't negate that trans men or others might menstruate, just like saying Black Lives Matter is a true statement and doesn't negate that other lives have value. It's logic 101.

No. Last week she retweeted an article that had the headline including “people who menstruate.” She said “there used to be a word for that..” referencing women:

https://twitter.com/jk_rowling/status/1269382518362509313?s=21

The response to THAT is why she had to write this long BS post. She’s a known TERF.

Yes, I know what she tweeted. She didn't say only women menstruate. She simply acknowledged that women are people who menstruate. It's true.

Dealing with ones menstrual cycle until its conclusion? Yes they are a woman familiar with a foundational female experience

I seem to remember some threads on this site mocking the awkward phrase "people who are pregnant". Now we're mocking Rowling for mocking "people who menstruate'.

The big one that gets me is when XY women want to compete in sports as women. Great, so now men can smash all our world records and ensure no biological woman will ever win a medal, step the F down.
I’m curious why trans people make it about gender? I thought it was about feeling like you were born in the wrong body. Like, a butch lesbian isn’t any less of a woman for having a buzzed head and working on motorcycles. Why does feeling comfortable wearing a dress and growing your hair long make you a woman if you have a penis?

My thoughts exactly in the first paragraph. There are a lot of us who love trans people, but this point in particular hurts me as a woman. As someone who is female. Trans people aren’t listening anymore. All they see is hate and you are wrong and you don’t understand, blah, blah, but the truth is that it goes both ways. They want to shut down anyone who disagrees with them. But we have a valid point, and concerns. So please listen and don’t disregard it. I am not happy with trans people suddenly competing in sports for women. They will always be at an unfair advantage and it’s disingenuous to think otherwise. I also don’t care for a trans competing in beauty pageants like Miss Universe. While drop dead gorgeous, when I saw Miss Spain last year, it broke my heart as a born woman. What like my actual, born with femininity wasn’t enough? A person who was once a man actually took a spot that should have been given to an actual biological female? It’s insulting, given all the crap that has been thrown at us females for so long. The fight just to be seen, heard and taken seriously, and then this? Why can’t those of you who disagree see that there is a point here and a frustration among women who have had to fight for so long just to have what they have. It would be demoralizing for me to be in a competition against a trans person and have an opportunity taken away from me. What I also think is that if you want to compete, maybe the olympics should have general or gender fluid races and competitions. That way we can all play fair.

I do agree with the points being made on this thread about biologically born women yet again being second to a biologically born man. Because this is what it feels like. I have no issue with whatever gender someone wants to identify with, how they want to dress, what pronoun they prefer, etc. But it feels like this is again biological women being less than biological men.

People who say someone is anti trans, are not listening to the arguements with an open heart and mind. Quick to the cancel culture and call outs! If you are one of them, shame on you. I implore you to read, and reread again. What JK Rowling said is valid. And no she isn’t anti trans for the love of God. Screw on your heads and do some critical thinking before jumping all over the place!

We don’t have a *choice* about being a woman. A man in a dress does. Than he transplains what a "real" woman is. That is vile and hateful.

She seems to think that the growing acceptance of trans rights is negatively affecting biological women’s place in society and also her involvement with domestic and abuse charities. Though I’m less clear on how that works for the second one.

Time for the older women to have several seats if they can't understand intersectional is the way things are now.

It seems that it's the younger feminists who don't understand that.

Intersectional means seeing the differences and advocating for what each group needs. It means acknowledging that black women and latina women and gay women and transgendered women all need specific advocacy and that we lift one another up in support of that advocacy. It SHOULD mean acknowledging the realities of biological sex and calling them what they are, women's issues.

In theory, but in practice it usually means telling all white women and/or light-skinned women to shut up, denigrating their experiences by calling them all privileged and mocking them for any hardships they experiences, and sometimes using antisemitic tropes and language to denigrate second-wave feminists, etc.

No. It means middle aged white women aren’t centered in all discussions on feminism which I realize is an issue for many.

Nope, usually it means shut up white women - especially the Jewy ones.
