No. You don’t get how to recruit allies. Again — SNCC and CORE did it in the 60s. Did you know that one of the CORE organizers was a Jewish kid from New York? Was he “performing”? Should he have been told to STFU? He gave his life for civil rights, literally. He was murdered by the KKK in Mississippi. I doubt you even know the history of this. |
| Why are people responding to this as if it were an official list from The Black People instead of some boomer chain mail? Just be respectful and helpful and don’t look for excuses to flounce off. |
Because from page 1 people who claim to be associated with the movement have endorsed the list. |
| Armchair racists, thank you for staying home. |
Does BLM have official guidance for allies? |
Who’s an armchair racist here? Someone who says they aren’t going to “follow the direction of black people without question”? I’m not doing that for anyone unless they’re pointing a gun at me. |
What wild shenanigans are you expecting to be asked to do? |
The movement is black people who want police not to suffocate them and their allies. It’s made up of all types of people, and yes that includes some who want you to shut up. The thing is, you should want police not to suffocate black people even if some of them hurt your feelings. |
Once again — if the civil rights organizations of the 60s could recruit white people to not only help, but assist in leading the movement, BLM can do so today. You do not get it. |
This is not the 60s. Man. If only the 60s has been enough. |
Well apparently I am expected to do whatever I am told. I believe that 99.9% of the protestors are peaceful, but if I happen to be told by the 0.1% who are rioters to burn a police vehicle, this list would suggest that I should do it “without question.” |
Oh, so you think the way to move forward from the 60s is to tell white people to STFU and forget about recruiting allies? |
There has been a lot of violence this week. Police violence. Protestor violence. There is also a global pandemic going on and social distancing guidelines in place. These are not absurd concerns. It also doesn't say "listen to the official organizers.". It literally says any rando black person. We're just responding to what was written. If people stopped defending it and just admitted it was overboard this thread would have died an early death. |
Exactly. This sort of message is extremely alienating. |
| This list is beyond stupid. |
