Wait, you mean the school board members, who are on the board because they received more votes than their opponents, will be the ones determining school system policies???!!!

Yup, keep voting a straight democratic ticket and you will continue to get more of this. Hopefully, this is a wake-up call to show you that they don't have your best interests in mind. Pro Tip: Find out who your teachers union endorses for the school board and vote the opposite election.

Do you even live in Maryland? Board of education elections in Maryland are non-partisan. The candidates aren't associated with political parties.

Lol, yea sure they are.... They may not have a (D) next to their name but they are far from non-partisan. Just vote the opposite of the teacher's union recommendations and you will be fine.

Yes, they are. It's not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of fact. The candidates may or may not have political beliefs, but the elections are non-partisan.

While the election may be non-partisan, the candidates certainly are not.

The election IS non-partisan. The candidates are candidates. "Non-partisan" election doesn't mean "candidates who have no beliefs about politics and have never voted." That would be dumb. As is telling people to stop voting a straight party ticket in a non-partisan election.

Not as dumb as hiding behind terminology to pretend that the current HC BOE isn't pushing an ultra liberal agenda.

In other words, the voters of Howard County elect people you don't support.

Why are people just focusing on River Hill? Atholton, Oakland, Long Reach, and Howard High Schools are all being effected by this redistricting. They want to ship FARM students from Oakland across 29 to Atholton. Many parents of FARM students are worried about transportation issues in case their child misses the school bus or they need to pick their child up from school. Also, their children will not be able to participate in after school activities because they will have no way of getting home in the evening. Forget about attending school functions, conferences, and volunteering because without a car low income parents are unable to be a part of the school community. Life is already difficult for poor families. Why make things even more complicated by busing students outside of their communities? Many of the low income communities in Howard County are within walking distances to amenities like schools, medical facilities, libraries, community centers, etc. This plan rips families from their communities where there is a support system.

Trust and believe low income parents are not thrill about this plan either. This plan is a political ploy use to divide various communities. The only folks that are advocating for this plan are political snakes who do not give a damn about FARM students. Yet, they want to use FARM families as a scapegoat from addressing the problems that they created. Poor people are not pawns that the school district and county council can just abuse to build up their resume for their next political gig.

The people who are pushing for this are not giving their time or money towards uplifting the low income communities in Howard. They just want to discard poor people into wealthy schools to hide numbers just to perpetuate that facade of helping poor children out. It's all BS! Poor families are not naive into thinking that the local politicians have their best interests at heart.

Community organizer Larry Pretlow is having a "NO ONE HAS TO SUFFER" meeting for the Oakland Mills Community who are against having their kids bused. It is on Saturday, September 14th at The Verona at Oakland Mills from 3:00 PM-4:45PM. The address is 9650 Whiteacre Rd. Ste. Columbia, MD 21045 It is free and refreshments will be included. Everyone from the Oakland Mills Community no matter where you live are invited to come to get informed.

Other communities and neighborhoods are forming their own groups as well. Stop assuming that it is only the rich white families who oppose this. There are many of us brown and black folks who are against our kids being bused! We love our communities and it is very degrading and insulting to assume that minority families are behind this disastrous plan. Busing hurts kids from all stripes and incomes.

Correct. It sounds like many of my fellow voters in Howard County are finding that they voted to elect people they don't support either.

+100. Montgomery County voters feel the same way about their BOE. Well, not all of them feel that way based on this thread, but you know what I mean, many do. Vote them out.

The same thing is going on in MCPS. Just watch, Whitman will be 100% untouched. The schools with larger asian communities like WJ and Wootton will be disrupted.

Nope. It's just typical liberal social engineering in an attempt to close the Achievement Gap. It, of course, won't work because it's not politically correct to actually address the real issues..

Whitman won't get touched but not because it's so White. It won't get touched because many of the residents are MEGA rich and have big-time connections within the local government.

Segregation isn't social engineering, but desegregation is. Go figure.

Well, SOME Montgomery County voters feel the same way about their BoE. But not enough to affect the outcome of the election.

River Hill is 10% AA, 6.5% Latino and less than 50% white. The people angry at the redistricting and quoted in the Baltimore Sun are clearly POC....

https://www.hcpss.org/f/schools/profiles/prof_hs_riverhill.pdf

The school is 76% White/Asian with less than 5% FARMs. How is that socioeconomically diverse?

Mildly curious, why is socioeconomically diverse a goal? Enough to drastically change people's lives and housing values?

Evidently socioeconomically segregated is a goal for some parents in River Hill. Why?

They want to pat themselves on the back.

So what are you saying? Do you think that white people trying to punish successful Asian families, or simply trying to boost their own predominately white schools with Asian test scores?

NP who is white and Jewish. Let me clarify: yes, I personally believe that liberal white people are trying to punish successful Asian families. This is backed up by colleges who are stating 'they have enough Asians' or 'they would be all Asian if they went by qualifications' (see Berkeley and Harvard). Asian is the new Jew in terms of discrimination.
