Why are people just focusing on River Hill? Atholton, Oakland, Long Reach, and Howard High Schools are all being effected by this redistricting. They want to ship FARM students from Oakland across 29 to Atholton. Many parents of FARM students are worried about transportation issues in case their child misses the school bus or they need to pick their child up from school. Also, their children will not be able to participate in after school activities because they will have no way of getting home in the evening. Forget about attending school functions, conferences, and volunteering because without a car low income parents are unable to be a part of the school community. Life is already difficult for poor families. Why make things even more complicated by busing students outside of their communities? Many of the low income communities in Howard County are within walking distances to amenities like schools, medical facilities, libraries, community centers, etc. This plan rips families from their communities where there is a support system. Trust and believe low income parents are not thrill about this plan either. This plan is a political ploy use to divide various communities. The only folks that are advocating for this plan are political snakes who do not give a damn about FARM students. Yet, they want to use FARM families as a scapegoat from addressing the problems that they created. Poor people are not pawns that the school district and county council can just abuse to build up their resume for their next political gig. The people who are pushing for this are not giving their time or money towards uplifting the low income communities in Howard. They just want to discard poor people into wealthy schools to hide numbers just to perpetuate that facade of helping poor children out. It's all BS! Poor families are not naive into thinking that the local politicians have their best interests at heart. Community organizer Larry Pretlow is having a "NO ONE HAS TO SUFFER" meeting for the Oakland Mills Community who are against having their kids bused. It is on Saturday, September 14th at The Verona at Oakland Mills from 3:00 PM-4:45PM. The address is 9650 Whiteacre Rd. Ste. Columbia, MD 21045 It is free and refreshments will be included. Everyone from the Oakland Mills Community no matter where you live are invited to come to get informed. Other communities and neighborhoods are forming their own groups as well. Stop assuming that it is only the rich white families who oppose this. There are many of us brown and black folks who are against our kids being bused! We love our communities and it is very degrading and insulting to assume that minority families are behind this disastrous plan. Busing hurts kids from all stripes and incomes.
