Why to people like going to 'the beach'? It's so boring.

Not to mention, OBX is the only beach place I know that has the worst sea food (or any food, really) anywhere. WTH?

No, OP. Both my wife and I are not fans of the beach. We will occasionally add a day at the beach to a vacation since the kids love it. But that's about all we can tolerate. Days of being at the beach are not for us. We have many friends who can't imagine their summer without a week (or more) at the beach, but not us.

Sand is hurting my tender feet
The air smells like rotting fish and solarcaine
I hate the people on the beach
With their towels and umbrellas, they're so insane

I don't wanna be on the beach! No! (x2)
I don't wanna be on the beach!
I don't wanna be on the beach! No!

I hate my girlfriend, she-she-she
Lies on the beach like a barrier reef
Soaking up the stupid sun
While the radio is blasting fun, fun, fun

I don't wanna be on the beach! No fun! (x2)
I don't wanna be on the beach!
I don't wanna be on the beach! No fun! No!
(x2)

This is no way to spend a summer
I've got sand caked on my feet
I gave my ice cream to a shark
And now I've got nothing to eat
No fun!

I don't wanna be on the beach! No fun!
I don't wanna be on the beach! No fun! No!
I don't wanna be on the beach!
I don't wanna be on the beach! No fun

I like the idea of a beach but the sand drives me crazy. I'm like OCD irritable when sand gets all over me.

As the owner of a beach house on the Delaware shore for over 25 years, if you don't like the beach, please stay away so you don't crowd us. We enjoy long days of sunshine. We play tennis or bike in the mornings and spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach with a good book and friends. There are great restaurants. We stay out for weeks at a time. We do other travel, but the beach is our favorite drug.

A few days at the beach, taking time to do other activities or hang out indoors, is great.

A full week of All Damn Day at the Beach is the worst. No thanks, I don’t want to take a cooler down and eat sandy food and roast. Ugh.

My beach vacation is at Sanibel Island. I enjoy morning and evening long walks on the beach, shell collecting, birding and kayaking at Ding Darling National Wildlife refuge. I also enjoy spending a few hours on the beach or in the pool in the afternoon. So I don't spend 24/7 at the beach but the beach is an integral part of the vacation. Love it.

Huh. 13 pages of posts and we come to the conclusion that people have different preferences for vacation.

Almost as exciting as the buttermilk post.

for me it's for the greatest naps everr. I lovveee naps on the beach with maybe an umbrella cuz it's so warm and cozy, especially cause the sand is hot from the sun so I can make a sand blanket. In addition, going to the beach usually means eating hot dogs and burgers! yumm

You paint a pretty picture and I'm glad you enjoy it. But you're neglecting to mention the 42,000 other people sitting on the beach within 2 feet of you and dingy brown surf so rough it skins knees & elbows. Not to mention mediocre, overpriced restaurants. No thanks!

We take a few different vacations a year. We do the exploring and active type of vacations, but we also do beach vacations. We go somewhere not crowded but with activities to do. Snorkeling, fishing, sightseeing, and water activities. We rarely just sit on the beach all day relaxing. But I do love sitting in the sun reading while DS is spending a couple hours at a kids club (he's 8). Everyone likes different styles of vacations and I think different vacations mean different things. Sometimes we need that relaxing beach vacation. As fun as our adventure vacations are, they aren't super relaxing!

In other words - why doesn't everybody think like me, like what I like? It's a narrow minded POV.

This post is from 2017. It's been discussed to death and I'm sure Op has moved on.

You can read at home - why should I book a vacation, in order to read on a beach...I want to do something new and adventurous in my vacation, something that cannot be done everywhere - like hiking on a volcano in Iceland, kayaking between icebergs under the light of the midnight sun in Greenland, hunting the Northern Lights on a frozen lake in Lapland, etc. I think that people have no idea, that there are so many places to see (apart from beaches) or maybe they are just too lazy..But trust me, when I tell someone about my vacations, I always have tears in my eyes - because the landscapes that I've seen were so breathtaking and the cultures that I've met were so impressive. This kind of vacations make me feel spiritually rich. I don't think that a vacation on a beach can ever give you this...

I am planning to go to Spitsbergen and Antarctica in the near future - and guess what: I read so many guide & travel books at home, in order to plan the trips.

P.S: it's actually good that people prefer boring beaches - this way there are never too many people on my itinerary )

You sound insufferable. Trust me, no one is interested in your breathless retelling of your adventures.

You realize cost is an issue, right? Lots of people in dc can afford a week in Bethany. Much fewer can afford Antarctica.

Of course I realize cost - but it depends on the priorities and how much you wish to go there. For me traveling is priority nr. 1, this does not mean that it should be the same for everyone.

You are digging that insufferable hole even more. Whenever people start throwing around "priorities" I gag. You can prioritize all you want but if you have $1-2K for a family of 4 leftover for any kind of vacation or travel for the whole year you can't "prioritize" global adventure into being. FFS

For what its worth, I travel the way you do. I maybe post 1-2 insta stories of a nice view or a great meal and that's it. I certainly don't do a misty eyed humble brag about the monk I spent the afternoon walking with and how spiritually rich my vacation has left me to my friends. BLEH. I say "it was really pretty, had a great time" and move on when someone asks. Because I can read a room and cool people don't actually have to brag about the cool things they do. You sound like the worst kind of travel snob try hard.
