Why to people like going to 'the beach'? It's so boring.

You can read at home - why should I book a vacation, in order to read on a beach...I want to do something new and adventurous in my vacation, something that cannot be done everywhere - like hiking on a volcano in Iceland, kayaking between icebergs under the light of the midnight sun in Greenland, hunting the Northern Lights on a frozen lake in Lapland, etc. I think that people have no idea, that there are so many places to see (apart from beaches) or maybe they are just too lazy..But trust me, when I tell someone about my vacations, I always have tears in my eyes - because the landscapes that I've seen were so breathtaking and the cultures that I've met were so impressive. This kind of vacations make me feel spiritually rich. I don't think that a vacation on a beach can ever give you this...

I am planning to go to Spitsbergen and Antarctica in the near future - and guess what: I read so many guide & travel books at home, in order to plan the trips.

P.S: it's actually good that people prefer boring beaches - this way there are never too many people on my itinerary )

You sound insufferable. Trust me, no one is interested in your breathless retelling of your adventures.

You realize cost is an issue, right? Lots of people in dc can afford a week in Bethany. Much fewer can afford Antarctica.

Of course I realize cost - but it depends on the priorities and how much you wish to go there. For me traveling is priority nr. 1, this does not mean that it should be the same for everyone.

I like the beach in fall and winter. It’s solitary and bleak. I bundle up, bring a books and something spiked in a thermos.

Do you understand that there are lots of people who could not afford those kinds of trips even if it was a "priority," unless you mean they should prioritize it over rent and food?

Yes, I can really understand...I left my country, in order to earn more, so that I can travel a lot....of course no one has to do the same. But I'm happy with my decision.

Tears in your eyes when you are bragging to some poor trapped victim about your travels? Wow.

I love beach vacations to places like Southern California or Cape May or many of the Florida spots (Siesta Key, Naples, St. Pete) that actually have some sort of existing infrastructure beyond the beach- shops, restaurants, live music, etc. It’s the OBX type areas where there is literally nothing but beach and residential for miles and miles on end that I just cannot do.

Well, it seems it was not a good idea to write about my type of vacation. Sorry for disturbing you. Have a nice day!

I do your type of vacation. I also love beaches. What I don't do is make people listen to me bragging and crying with self-satisfaction at the same time.

We also are not into beach trips- boring! Kids get hot and are done with the beach after the first 2 days. We splurged on a beachfront hotel on Sanibel and the kids tired of the beach and preferred the small onsite pool (!!). Also I think the hot sun, sand etc makes all of us cranky. Of course the beach type activities are good- Funland etc.

But YMMV- I don’t judge other people’s vacations!

I love it for a week if we go with some friends. I do need a few restaurants though. I love to spend a lot of the day at the beach, sit on a chair in the late afternoon in the low tide and read, shower and have a drink on the porch and then eat a good dinner and hang out with friends. The best.

You might know me, I'm the one with great pale skin, nice hair and a passport full of interesting stamps.

And a stick up your ass. Get over yourself.

The majority prefers beach vacations - it's a fact. But why being aggressive ("stick up your ass") towards someone with other preferences? Are people that love traveling around the world such a big problem?

We like all kinds of vacations. I grew up inland and looked forward to a week at my aunt’s on the coast most summers. As a kid I was never bored at the beach! You had to drag me away each day, lol. As an adult I like variety and DH is not the biggest beach person (he’s had a skin melanoma and tries to avoid too much time in the sun). Pre-kids we did more adventurous stuff. But beach vacations are the lowest common denominator when we vacation with either my family or ILs- it’s something everyone can generally get on board with. And my toddler loved the beach this year. It definitely helps to go somewhere where there are other activities available for when you need a break or the weather isn’t great. Even DH had fun, I think partly because he saw how much our kiddo enjoyed it.

+1. I prefer her type of vacations to the beach, but I can't believe she is so tone deaf as to not realize how obnoxious her posts were.
