I have been here 15 years, and have notice concern about shifting demographics. And concern about the TJ arms race in western county MSs. And tweaks in admissions on the margins to address it. But I have not seen any decrease in support for the existence of TJ. In fact, it’s pretty clear that no one wants to be the person who changed something and broke TJ.

So this a TJ thread; Let's do some math. India's population is 1.2 B. Apparently the"forward" class is 5%, or 60 million. So there are more than 30 million Indians in the US?

Competition to get into top schools is a separate aspect of things. Each group (forward, backward, most-backward, etc) fight for their quota of seats. In the 80's a most-backward person could get into Engineering with a 90% average in senior year. A forward candate would require 99% or above to get into the same school. That hasn't changed much since except that the MB and B's get higher and higher scores increasing the pressure on the forwards..

I am not aware of any affirmative action programs in China and Korea. Would like to hear from people from there.

S Korea has no minority population to speak of--99% one race.

China and Korea didn't have anything nearly equivalent to the cast system India used to systematically degrade and oppress people you refer to as "backward" and "most backward," so why would they have affirmative action programs like India?

You mean why "wouldn't" they have have AA programs in India? They do and they should. However, what's happened over the years is that everyone who's not at the top of the caste system finds a way to get their caste classified as "backward". On paper they are backward. In the real world, they are upper middle class/rich businessmen, farmers, or otherwise rich folk and the handouts continue for generations. Most of the really backward people continue to suffer in poverty.

As a result, the upper castes are over represented in the diaspora. Talk to the next 20 Indians you know. You'll find that they (or their parents) are from the upper castes.

+1. Please name this mythical excellent plubliic school system, larger than a few schools serving a uniformly affluent suburb (say 20+% FARMs) that does not track. In this area, APS tracks, MCPS tracks, FCPS tracks generally does not, but even they have magnet HSs.
