I don't see how anyone could look at that list and find it anything but incredibly impressive. You're creating some kind of strawman where the only indicia of excellence would be 100% admission to the Ivies. But as PP says (who seems much better informed about the actual schools that your brainless reliance on Ivy status) "This is a STEM powerhouse list." |

Fine list, just significantly less impressive than prior years, especially last year's list. |
My S is a rising senior at TJ and says that the Class of 2017 was not as strong academically as the Class of 2016 which was considered an extremely strong class. He mentioned that some kids were mistakenly admitted to the 2017 class and many of those kids struggled. He considers his Class of 2018 to be in between the two other classes academically so it will be interesting if next year's list is stronger. The x factor is that applications to the top schools keep increasing making it tougher each year. UVA's applications were up 12% this year. |
Here is a breakdown of # of applications and acceptances for 2017 https://tjhsst.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/inline-files/TJHSST%20Profile%202017-18.pdf:

Still impressive but it appears that its getting harder for TJ kids to go to the top schools just like everyone else. Ex: UVA acceptance rate is down to 56% from 64% two years ago. |
My kid isn’t going to TJ to get into an elite college. We couldn’t afford it anyway. We are aware she’s have been more successful at her base school. She’s going to TJ for the amazing course offerings and the academically minded peers. So far, so good! |
+1. Another TJ parent here and my D understood going to TJ would make it tougher to get into some colleges but she wanted the TJ experience and cohort. Now a senior she knows she made the right decision for her. TJ is not for everyone but it is a wonderful HS experience for many. |
Keep in mind this is a matriculation list, not an acceptance list. Contrary to what you read here, not everyone can afford an Ivy. |
Based on my read of the list the top few colleges offered admission to 680 students. Assuming 50% of them took the admission, that's 340. Out of 430 students. 79% admit rate to top schools! That's pretty impressive.
Even if you think some of these schools are not "top" you would still have over 50% of the kids going to "top" schools. Here's my basis for the 680 UVA 191 W&M 142 Michigan 65 UMCP 54 UIUC 48 CMU 36 Georgia tech 35 UC Berkeley 34 Cornell 25 Upenn 15 Duke 13 Chicago 12 MIT 10 Total 680 |
Chuckle.... |
Add the following schools with 2017 admits under 10 students: Stanford 121 applicants and 7 admits, Princeton 106/9, Harvard 91/6, Yale 72/8, Williams 9/3, Amherst 6/3 Pomona 7/0. |
Why not do the same analysis with actual enrollment figures from last year? http://thebullelephant.com/college-destinations-for-tjhsst-class-of-2017/ |
Including some missing schools to the above analysis and using actual admits from the link above, 237 of the 430 kids end up going to "top" schools. Here's the list. Accepted Attending UVA 191 62 W&M 142 38 Michigan 65 16 UMCP 54 5 UIUC 48 9 CMU 36 15 Georgia tech 35 1 UC Berkeley 34 11 Cornell 25 13 Upenn 15 6 Duke 13 7 Chicago 12 6 MIT 10 8 Stanford 7 5 Princeton 9 6 Harvard 6 4 Yale 8 4 Williams 3 1 Amherst 3 1 Columbia 4 US Military academy 1 Rice 3 Brown 3 Johns Hopkins 3 Harvey Mudd 2 US Airforce academu 2 US Coast guard 1 Total 716 237 % of acceptances 33% Total students 430 55% |
You didn't take into account that some of the same kids got accepted to multiple schools. I don't think there are 680 kids in the class. |
