It would be great if they renovated the Safeway, but not at the price of building another mediocre Cathedral Commons on the end of Morrison Street!

+100%. No more Cathedral Commons in upper NW, thank you!

In the good old days, the architects who designed Cathedral Commons would have been tarred-n-feathered. Such a great spot for such an unappealing eye sore.

whatves guys - i can think of a lot more places in cathedral commons that l'd rather go to than the strip in CC. really don't understand the hate - there's way more retail that I would actually use there.

That's because you're a childless millennial.

Cathedral Commons is a dumbed-down version of Rockville Town Center but without any public amenity areas. It's got mostly corporate chain restaurant concepts, a bunch of banks and the world's longest CVS. There are a handful of nice places there but most of the retail and restaurants are generic. I agree with PP that the "design" is unappealing and cheap looking. I'd rather have the eclectic mix of neighborhood serving retail (many of which are smaller, independent businesses) that exists in Chevy Chase.

lol Cactus Cantina alone outshines anything on the CC strip. You want breakfast go to the dirty diner or the horrible bread and chocolate with waiters that are old and awful. I'm sorry but IMO (since you're offering yours) Cathedral Commons did a great job. The new Giant is nothing but awesome compared to that rat hole Safeway. Oh and actually clean. Anyone I know who has grown up in the area is embarrassed by the ongoing state of the Conn Ave strip all in the name of NIMBY. I know I am. Would much rather prefer CC.

+1 Conn Ave has great potential, but it looks gross and ramshackle compared to CC (which has some great places including 2Amys, Cactus Cantina, Jetties). It certainly could be made much more appealing with improvements a la Capital Hill, but it is wholly unappealing at present. To compare it positively to CC is a joke.

Two Amy's, Cactus Cantina and Jetties are independent businesses that are not tenants of Cathedral Generic Commons and predated the construction of CC. They are all located along Macomb St west of Wisconsin, a strip that could certainly use some DC dollars to plant trees, repair the sidewalks and replace the highway style cobra lights with more decorative fixtures.

Two Amys and Jetties, more so, are relatively new. CC, and I mean the area, was and is more receptive to new infrastructure and new businesses. See the prior posts of the Conn Ave residents screaming NIMBY in defending that bus lot. Those in CC proper such as Barcelona and Raku have added new dining options that those on Conn Ave would have to drive to reach.

Ok, PP, you have just proven beyond any doubt that you are a childless milennial who is very new to the District along with your 100,000 bearded cousins. Learn your history or STFU

bullshit. if you really had "kids," then you'd know the value of having a library, community center, a bunch of preschools, a children's shoe store, a top notch toy store, a children's clothing store, and even a crappy diner with cheap pancakes within a 2-block area.

CCDC isn't Shaw, and that's OK. this weedy strip is highly functional for the actual people who live near it.

This entire post made me laugh out loud. First of all, Two Amys has been there for 15 years. Jetties used to be Something Sweet (same owners) and has been there for at least five years. The idea that that area could in any way possible be though of as more receptive to new infrastructure is insane. The battles over Cathedral Commons are infamous. The locals even tried to designate the old Giant as a historic landmark... talk about a rat hole.

I like it better than Cathedral Commons. It's much more useful for me and my family.

"CC proper" and " CC...the area" -- gag me with a large spoon! "Cathedral Commons" is the contrived marketing name for a shopping/apartment development. It is not the name of an area or a neighborhood. Last I checked the area was called McLean Gardens or perhaps Cathedral Heights. Cathedral Commons' pretentious positioning (down to its Chanel-like logo) is laughably preposterous, given its mediocre (even ugly) design and the fact that it's anchored by another CVS .... and a Giant.

I agree. I also agree that it could use a beautification committee.

Doesn't Mary Cheh have access to "Great Streets" beautification funds? I wish she'd spend less time on social engineering and more time actually helping her Ward with projects like this.

Who really cares about Cathedral Commons vs. Chevy Chase, DC. No one, in their right mind, wants Connecticut Ave bulldozed and a CC put up in its place. Neighbors are discussing the need for the strip to be historically renovated and beautified with the addition of better eateries. Most people agree the amenities (library, postoffice, UPS, Childs Play, Avalon, CVS, Starbucks, Periwinkle, Full of Beans, Relaxed Nail Salon, Core 72, Jetties, Macon, Blue 44, beer and wine stores) are all good and better than any other NW neighborhood. It's the desire to fix the sidewalks, beautify the tree wells, renovate store fronts, and update some of the food eateries - like the Diner, Bread and Chocolate, Pumpernickle, Parthenon, Arucola, etc.
