Professor of Helminthology here. The mouth thing is unfortunately very real. It happens most frequently in your sleep, within a few hours of taking the medication.
We usually recommend your spouse stay awake next to you with a pair of chopsticks to grab the worm and pull it out, in case it changes its mind. Please don't use tweezers, as this can bisect the worm, making it very hard, and unpleasant, to remove the rest of the beast.

The mouth is actually not the worst-case scenario: occasionally they will try to emerge from a man's penis, a singularly unpleasant experience given their barbs.

I talked to my mother about pinworms. Apparently I had it as a child. She said it was easy to get rid of and no big deal.

I bought pin-x on the basis of this thread. Was not easy to find. Any downside to just taking it for the hell of it?

Yes. You can kill your cohabitants.

Pinx does not work a lot of times. The worms have developed resistance to it and other meds. There are people who have had them for years.

No downside. It won't hurt you if you are worm free, and will treat parasites if you are. I give it to the entire family twice a year. I grew up in a developing country, and the foreign service made us de-worm four times a year.
