Another shooting near the National Zoo

Now, the article is very sparse and just says the zoo was having special events that had been a tradition for decades. No mention that it's African American day. No mention of past history of violence on African American day. No mention of the fact that part if the problem is that people from all different neighborhoods and crews come to the day and that causes tension. It's just bizarre. I would really love to know the decision making behind their lack of more extensive coverage.

I assumed it was because they didn't want to mention it as an AA event and get accused of being racist.

Anyway, the day needs to go. The zoo is free an open to anyone, everyday of the year but Christmas and has been for long enough. Segregation at this particular venue has long since ended. If they want to be "one city", start acting like it.

Who is "they?"

I DO think it should be closed to high schoolers. Many other school districts are also out on Easter Monday and, unfortunately, some use this day as the day to handle beefs with rival schools/gangs/etc. Banning entry to teens who aren't accompanied by an adult would be a great first step. Large groups of unaccompanied minors is never a good idea.

-AA woman who is annoyed by the calls for black leaders to do something. I don't have a "leader" and the opinion of Jesse and Sharpton only seems to matter to racist white folks looking to justify their disgusting mindset

How would you ban entry to teens? And, what would you do if hundreds of them congregate by the entrance?

High school is in session. And/or police are stationed near entrances. It's really not that hard. Once teens realize that the zoo is not a stop for them, they will move on. They go now because they can.

Gang activity, it seems:

A Zoo employee reported that teens were stealing and fighting. Why didn't the police respond and arrest them? Aren't they paid to do exactly that? Is there a conspiracy here, that no arrests were allowed, unless there's a gun involved? Please explain.

Looks like the stealing/fighting happened PRIOR to Easter Monday, so it has nothing to do with this event and everything to do with teens out of school, looking for shit to get into. Not sure I buy the stealing/fighting thing because if they were stealing, they should have been arrested, not just kicked out.

Why aren't the police arresting criminals who are stealing?

What are you yammering about?

Anonymous wrote:Okay, you're right. Journalists are all assholes and DCUM is a fantastically reliable news source. Oh, and the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are all real and take group vacations to the Bahamas.

Morons like you are killing journalism because you refuse to pay for actual news, dumb the whole bloody system down and only want to hear/believe what reinforces your preconceived notions.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...

You fucking cancel it for one year and tell the public that if this shit continues, Easter Monday will be cancelled permanently. It isn't up to the Zoo to prevent the violence, it's up to the community to do so. If it's that important to have Easter Monday at the Zoo, local leaders and influence makers will ensure the violence ends.

Why is this so fucking difficult to understand?

Last year my cousins were from Indiana were visiting DC at Easter. The next day, they did the tourist thing and visited the zoo. They said that the whole atmosphere was scary, and vowed they would never go back. I tried to convince them that the zoo is normally very safe. And last year, there was no shooting.

LOL, those types of stories are priceless.

What more information, exactly, do you need? Are you blind or just ignorant to past events. There was a shooting...at the Zoo...on Easter Monday...not the first time this has happened. What more information do you need?

What community? How do you propose that local leaders and "influence makers" ensure that the violence ends?
