Silver Springs schools?

Anonymous
Think about it: do you think there's only one parent on dcum from Silver Spring? Or from Woodside? Or Oakland Terrace?

Well OP, this is a very good introduction to living here. Hope you aren't scared away!!

I don't see a difference at all in the quality of education -- in fact, his school has been something of a disappointment. At least half of the teachers aren't very good at all, and he is bored and resentful of all the busywork.

But he is surrounded by lots and lots of very rich kids, most of them white, so if that makes a difference to some people ...

Given how many affluent white families have bailed on MCPS in recent years, I'm surprised anyone would make such a flippant remark in 2014. Those rich white kids are in limited supply in this majority-minority system, so get a good look at them while you still have the chance.

So you know how many affluent white families have bailed on MCPS in recent years? How do you know this? Where did you find the data? I'd love to see the data.

(Anecdotes are not data.)

Yes a good reason not to live in Bethesda/Potomac.

Focus on the high schools as most elementary schools are good. I wish our real estate agent had told us that.

Real estate agents cannot make representations (or express opinions) about the quality of the schools.

There are excellent high schools in Silver Spring (which is huge in area). The Down County Consortium has a nice variety of options.

i assumed DCC schools were good until i had to move because of work. the standards at shool vary a lot and i no longer can say DCC standards are high as elsewhere.

Which schools were you comparing?

OP, I'd love to know if you've started looking at homes yet, and what areas you decided on. This thread got crazy!

Hands down Highland View ES.
Nice teachers, with years of experience.
Great and firm principal who deals with any problem.
Kids who misbehave do not get a free ride.
Being sent to the office is not a 5 minute pep talk time.

At this school, children do not choke each other, teachers do not fall down and have concussions, and students do not run away from the school and have several adults chasing them down the street (just happened at a nearby school).

Silver Spring schools do not compare favorably with schools in the so called green zone.

They just don't.

The green zone? Is this the olney poster back for more?

I'm an Olney poster, but I didn't post that comment, PP. (I know dozens of Olney moms who read DCUM btw.)

RE: the DCC - I don't know anyone who got their first choice school unless it was the school they were already zoned for...so folks shouldn't buy a home in one area and count on getting into another HS in th DCC.

not an Olney poster or a supporter of any other school. Happily retired. The expectation in schools like Springbrook, Blair, etc are very different from the expectations at Churchill,Wooton, etc. So, the standards are very different.

What I get from this discussion is that many SS parents and the various organizations that have a commercial stake in promoting SS like to say SS schools are good. By their standards they maybe. You must decide if they meet your standards.
