[*despite having outsized influence]
(If anyone ever claims to recognize my writing style here it will be because of my typos) |
Agree. American Jews have been at the forefront of civil rights and fighting for the underdog and generally against evil. I feel like this reflexive embrace of Israel makes them lose the moral high ground they have always and justly occupied. |
Israel is very important to many of us, just like fighting for the underdog in America is. I don't suppose anyone not Jewish will understand that. I look at the long arc of history and know in my bones that there is one place in the world whose sole purpose is to protect *me.* America? Hardly. It wasn't that long ago that the St. Louis was turned away in the water and Jews were sent to their deaths. And now? Yeah, right, I trust Trump and his jackboot thugs to keep me safe. And with Democrats like Maureen Galindo who want to put "Zionists" in camps, the left is barely better. Warts and all, Israel was created to enable Jews to survive and flourish and get us back to our roots that reach back thousands of years, despite the haters claiming that tie doesn't exist. (There has been much ancient Hebrew found during archeological digs.) Don't forget that many of us have relatives in Israel. I do. I've been there. I know these people. They, like most of us, want Netanyahu out and peace for everyone. No one enjoys having their lives disrupted the way they have been. We are waiting for principled leadership in Israel much as most of us are waiting for principled leadership of the U.S. But we will not abandon our ancestral homeland and its people to score political points--not happening. |
Israel is no longer the underdog though. Maybe in 1950 they were but not today. They’re arguably better off than most Americans |
| By better off, I don’t mean financially but with political representation and favor |
This reads like indoctrination and not like independent, fact based views. |
That's fine and very understandable. However, so far the US has spent about $300 Billion supporting Israel. And the Israel of today is not the Israel of yore. Netanyahu and his government of ultra-orthodox thugs just killed 85,000 mostly innocent people in Gaza, invaded Lebanon and sent another 1 million people fleeing for their lives, sent 700,000 religious zealots in to the West Bank to take more land and terrorize people, and launched a major with the Iran, which has caused chaos and the US to expend an enormous percentage of its most advanced munitions. We literally just used half of all our THAAD interceptors - what we use to defend against a nuclear attack - to protect Israel while not being able to protect our own bases in the Gulf. You have to ask, why is the US spending such an enormous amount of money and resources to fight for a tiny but extremely belligerent country of no strategic relevance to the US? It's not 1948 anymore. There is no justification for this in 2026. And that's not a left or right issue. Pretty much everyone under 50 thinks the massive amount of money and military resources we spend on Israel is nuts. |
You are going to have to eventually recognize the truth, pp: Israel cannot exist as a “Jewish” state unless it continues to engage in apartheid and genocide. In the end that is what this is all about. |
PP: I didn't say they were the underdog. I explained to you why I and so many people support them. |
PP: Israel actually is of very important strategic relevance to us. That you don't understand that undercuts other claims you made, many of which are false or exaggerated. |
PP: What do you think will happen to Jewish Israelis if Israel is no longer Jewish? That's right--they'll be overwhelmed by terrorists who will make October 7 look like child's play. |
I think this is a bizarre response. Are you actually aware of what Jewish settlers are doing to Palestinians on a regular basis, day in and day out? Who are the “terrorists” here? Why is it ok for Palestinians to be treated this way and not Jewish Israelis? Why aren’t we saying that Palestinians are being overwhelmed by terrorist settlers? If you have chosen to live in an apartheid society, you’ve chosen a path of revenge and bloodshed. They are going to have to find a way out that does not involve more death. |
Can you explain its strategic relevance? Other than in protecting itself? |
Of course I'm aware. It's horrible and needs to stop. That doesn't mean I don't support Israel as a country or its people (not the settlers, but everyone else). |
Sure, assuming these questions are being asked in good faith. It's a regional bulwark against terror. It has insane military and intelligence capabilities that have enabled us to thwart threats. Its Mossad is unparalleled. I'm very, very thankful we have it. |
