Reports are coming from several different country officials: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/may/22/gaza-flotilla-activists-allege-sexual-assault-and-in-israeli-detention
The Jewish people I know are some of the kindest people I know with a strong sense of moral clarity. And yet they seem to reflexively protect Israel. When you see stories like this (and many others), it is hard to understand how they are managing the cognitive dissonance. Israel seems like it’s governed by a bunch of thugs.
Agree. American Jews have been at the forefront of civil rights and fighting for the underdog and generally against evil. I feel like this reflexive embrace of Israel makes them lose the moral high ground they have always and justly occupied.
Israel is very important to many of us, just like fighting for the underdog in America is. I don't suppose anyone not Jewish will understand that. I look at the long arc of history and know in my bones that there is one place in the world whose sole purpose is to protect *me.* America? Hardly. It wasn't that long ago that the St. Louis was turned away in the water and Jews were sent to their deaths. And now? Yeah, right, I trust Trump and his jackboot thugs to keep me safe. And with Democrats like Maureen Galindo who want to put "Zionists" in camps, the left is barely better. Warts and all, Israel was created to enable Jews to survive and flourish and get us back to our roots that reach back thousands of years, despite the haters claiming that tie doesn't exist. (There has been much ancient Hebrew found during archeological digs.) Don't forget that many of us have relatives in Israel. I do. I've been there. I know these people. They, like most of us, want Netanyahu out and peace for everyone. No one enjoys having their lives disrupted the way they have been. We are waiting for principled leadership in Israel much as most of us are waiting for principled leadership of the U.S. But we will not abandon our ancestral homeland and its people to score political points--not happening.
Israel is no longer the underdog though. Maybe in 1950 they were but not today. They’re arguably better off than most Americans
PP: I didn't say they were the underdog. I explained to you why I and so many people support them.
