How did CBK bag JFK jr?

I’m soon the be 51 so I experienced it all as a teen/young adult in real time.

I do remember but I thought it happened more in the middle of their relationship ? there was some on and off action going on,

Yes, I think you're right. She was off-and-on with both or less serious with JFK Jr and still with Browne but this event made them closer, maybe? Something like that.

The rumor at the time was that Jackie hated Daryl Hannah.

Darryl Hannah is interesting because I think she really didn't need JFK, Jr. She was an A-Lister (Splash had already come out), she had her own activist causes, and she also grew up extremely wealthy. She wasn't someone who was interested in social climbing, she was born rich and was a big star in her own right.

Both Darryl's biological father (who owned a shipping/boat company) and her stepfather (real estate tycoon) were educated and wealthy, though her stepfather was even more wealthy.

The show portrays her as incredibly needy, narcissistic, shallow, and kind of stupid. No idea if that's realistic or not, but it's a brutal depiction. Watching it, I could not wait for John to dump her because I found her so grating.

All the Daryl stuff around Jackie's funeral was really obnoxious to watch. Daryl showing up uninvited and telling John that the public "needed" to see them together, and then coming out on the balcony with him (again uninvited) and grabbing his hand when it was clear he didn't want to? I hope these are made up details they added to try and make John and Carolyn's relationship feel more destined and inevitable than it was. Though in that case, they really did Daryl Hannah dirty! She's still alive! I bet Johns' other exes were happy not to show up in this thing.

She wrote a letter to the editor of the NY Times disputing her portrayal as fictional and damaging: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/03/06/opinion/daryl-hannah-love-story-jfk-jr.html

The show does not depict Darryl in the best light. She refutes she made JKK Jr. bring the dog’s ashes and drugs.

I feel bad because there are negative stories about her in the show that are from actual people's accounts (like Carole's, she told the dog and ashes story), but those accounts are based on John's perspective and not hers. Meanwhile she has always respected everyone's privacy.

It’s entirely plausible that Daryl was an immature, self-centered, needy diva when she was young—and potentially using drugs—and then she grew up a bit and became a recluse for a while to regroup, reinvent, and try to distance herself from the embarrassing behavior of her youth.

I believe the dog thing. She totally seems like the kind of person who would fall apart when a pet dies.

Kate was NOT middle class. She also went to boarding schools which require money.

“Catherine has two younger siblings, Philippa ("Pippa") and James.[12][13] Her paternal family benefited financially from trust funds and were upper-middle-class with ties to the landed gentry;[14][15] her great-grandparents Noël and Olive Middleton played host to members of the British royal family in the 1920s through to the 1940s.[16][17][18] Her maternal family are descended from coal miners and have been described as working-class.[19][20]”

I thought the Middletons were in a ton of debt? I got the impression they spent more than they had in the hopes of getting one of their girls married to a rich guy.

I also thought Kate transferred to the school the Prince attended...

No, they portrayed her as clueless and not on his wavelength. I didn’t get narcissist at all

Her behavior around Jackie's funeral was definitely portrayed as narcissistic -- she's making it all about herself and her relationship with John, and forcing herself into a private family event despite the tension between her and the family.

I don't actually think Hannah did any of that, but the way it's portrayed in the show is definitely that. Her character in the show is really unflattering.

I think it's character assassination, and it really sucks.

Also think JFK jr. was older and more ready to commit than William was. Different dynamics… but I was a kid when JFK jr passed away, so this is just my impression based on what I’ve read after the fact.

Me again, thinking more about it, my analysis is that JFK jr was much more in love or besotted with Carolyn than William has ever been with Kate. With William you get the sense that he is bored or always feels he could have found a better match in some way. And I don’t sadly jfk jr and CBK passed away before their marriage was telling in any very long term kind of way.

But long story short I think jfk jr loved CBK more than she loved him and I think Kate loves/needs William more than he thinks he loves or needs her. William is more complicated because he has to stay married for image sake. And I’m sure he resents that and kind of projects it onto Kate. But what do I know - hopefully they’re happy.

I disagree.

I think William was attracted to Kate, her loving family, and the fact that she demonstrated she was in it for the long haul. I suspect he desperately wanted a wife who would provide a loving home for him and his children as well as someone strong enough to add value rather than require hand-holding. They seem to be a very good match. I really don’t understand all the dcum speculation about him not loving her. They seem really committed.

Oh, I understand it. Kate tried to get William for a long time. Maybe ten years. William tried to be with many others, but they either did not want him or the lifestyle. He was with a woman who broke up with him because she did not want the life.

It's likely he has someone on the side. Seems to run in the family.

The Kennedys were good at destroying women. That's for sure.
