You mean that fight that happened outside a bar at 1am? Dont think that's unique to UMD. |
What about the brawl during daytime at the chicken restaurant? Or the girl who got jumped at Taco Bell? PS - The sexual assaults and crime on campus never make it to PG County police level since campus police has jurisdiction and “handles it.” |
Are you saying they had a 92% yield? I am not sure what you mean by 8% OOS didn't attend? |
I don't think that my job teaching high school in a high poverty school puts me in a bubble. You specifically referenced students who couldn't afford any out of state school, not students who need to stay close for other reasons. I responded about those students. Yes, there are students who need to stay close. You also say that students with "full rides" pay for housing when the definition of a full ride is a scholarship that covers housing. I don't know what high school counselors can confirm. I don't think they would know who they are, so I'm not sure how they can confirm that all the students you happen to know who were rejected with high stats were white. I think I'll just take your word on that. |
I'm thinking the ^PP hasn't been in the dorms recently. My kid was at Pyon Chen, and it was amazing. Pretty big, bright, right next to the Y. Bathrooms were great. They're now at the View. My younger DC has toured other colleges, and their dorms don't compare to Pyon Chen. DC says we were spoiled with Pyon Chen. IMO, a lot of univ have not so great dorms. As a PP stated, UMD is renovating other dorms. Also, lots of colleges have assaults and petty theft. It's awful, but I wouldn't single out UMD for this. |
| $400+ gas bills in winter, $600+ electric bills in summer, $15k a year in property taxes, crazy car registration fees, 3-4 soles trap mail in tickets per year, and my kid with a 4.4w/3.9 uw taking 4 aps senior year gets rejected. This state sucks. |
Do you have any kids away at college? Off campus housing and living expenses are shockingly expensive. Tons of Maryland parents would prefer to pay in state tuition and have their kids commute (for myriad reasons). This used to be fairly easy for smart kids, and now tons of proud alums have been shut out when their high stats kids are rejected. Mcps counselors recognize this. UMCP is a total crapshoot: nobody can predict acceptance. The fact that a kid rejected from UMCP can get a scholarship to schools that are far better ranked is very telling. And if people included demographics in their posts along with stats (race, school, HHI, etc.), you would have a clearer picture. Anyway, go take a drive on campus and check out the vibe. Not today obviously since the campus had to shut down due to aged hvac and plumbing. |
Yep. And did any of your kid’s friends with lesser stats magically get in? ^^^ That’s the even more infuriating thing. |
Paying your utility bills indeed doesn’t not guarantee college admission. It stings, but hopefully your kid has other options. It will be okay! |
Are you trying to say your house is too big with those bill $, your house is too drafy? |

DP Even THs are getting $400+ heat bills. Big jump in the service fee. Plus, we pay a premium for everything in MoCo…and the leaders in Annapolis assume everyone in our county is affluent, so we get squeezed to subsidize the rest of the state. It’s reasonable for longtime residents to be frustrated when their kid gets rejected from UMCP but gets into a handful of objectively better-ranked schools that were a reach. Something isn’t right. |
