Living-Learning and Special Programs at a Glance— Invitations will be in decision letters unless otherwise noted.

Honors College -

• Generally a 4 year program but length depends on which sub community students choose/are placed in.

• 8 sub-communities– students preference based on interest - details will be sent on this process after admission. (https://honors.umd.edu/living-learning-programs/honors-living-learning-programs-at-a-glance-1/)

• Access to “H-version” (honors sections) of some classes

• Earn citation on transcript upon completion

• Students must have been admitted to Honors to have been considered for the Banneker/Key Scholarship

• Residence Halls: Anne Arundel, Dorchester, Ellicott (no A/C), Hagerstown (no A/C), Johnson-Whittle, La Plata, Prince Frederick, Pyon-Chen

• Honors.umd.edu

College Park Scholars -

• Generally a 2 year program

• 13 sub-communities– students preference based on interest (including the reimagining of the former CIVICUS LLP) - https://scholars.umd.edu/home/programs

• Focus on application of field to real world through hands-on capstone/practicum, and service

• Primarily housed in the Cambridge Community - all halls: Bel Air, Cambridge, Centreville, Chestertown, Cumberland

• Earn citation on transcript upon completion

FIRE -

• Generally a 1.5 year (3 semester program)

• Made up of 16 “streams” - (streams are specific research groups/teams) - Students preference streams -https://www.fire.umd.edu/streams

• Focuses on engaging new students in a faculty-mentored research experience

• Earn citation on transcript upon completion

• No specific housing/residence halls

BioFIRE -

• Part of the FIRE Community (see above) but with a biological sciences focus and living component.

• Housed in Somerset Hall

Carillon Communities-

• Generally a 1 year program with course requirements completed in the first semester

• Focus on answering “big questions” through teamwork and creative problem solving

• 3 Sub communities based around the general education course students take in the first semester

Does the accepted letter also have details about merit scholarships like Banneker Key or is that separate?

DC accepted! 4.87GPA(IBDP), 1450

Did you have to apply separately for honors college/fire?

that comes out later, like march? Can't remember when DC got their merit announcement.

My daughter is at the hair salon and doesn't want to check until she gets home. It's not her first choice, but I am very curious! Especially with all these different types of admissions (fire, honors, etc.).
