Speaking of someone from polygamous country, I always giggle when men say this. In polygamy, the topmost fifth or sixth of men have multiple wives.
The bottom half (literally half) of men have no wives.
The men in the middle who are not quite top-tier each have one wife.
Every now and then, that one wife married to a middling man sees a chance to be a wealthy man's second or third wife and leaves with her children to do just that. It's also not unusual for a man to end up raising a child quietly fathered by a wealthy man. He deals with it because if he doesn't, his wife will leave with the kids and just go ahead and be that wealthier boyfriend newest wife. He won't be able to find a new wife easily because there are major financial startup costs in polygamous societies to taking a new wife. Women don't just come cheap for some stupid ring the way they do over here. If he shuts up, however, then the wealthy man will kick him some cash for the use of his wife.
Honestly, I married an American and it was an error. If this was my birth country, I would've left my husband to be a very wealthy man's third wife in a heartbeat. I wouldn't even have to have sex with my new husband all that often because the other wives would share that rotation. If he nagged me too often, I'd just find him another wife to distract him and keep enjoying his money.
Polygamy is actually a very good deal for women from a financial and hypergamy standpoint, contrary to what western countries claim. It's only when to bring in things like "love," morality and how Jesus wants monogamy that the case is made that women "suffer."
