You clearly don’t live in DC. Of course I don’t think people should expect to be robbed. I have been down on U St/Logan Circle a million times (fave bar is there). In my 25 years of living in DC, I have never been a victim of crime. But also DC is not NYC, there isn’t a lot going on at 3 am that is anything good. Nothing good happens at 3 am in DC.

1- It's RACIST blah blah blah since we know what the vast majority of offenders would look like, all in spite of the lifelong positives this experience would give to same said offenders. But calling something Racist is more important to the left than results.
2- It's oppressive! Blah blah blah it's bringing slavery back. No. It's bringing ACCOUNTABILITY back.
3- Some might have past trauma blah blah blah See above. Softness is en vogue. There's a reason why disciplining children has passed the test of centuries. Go read some testimonials from reformed criminals.
4- It's embarrassing and singles individuals out because they'll be seen in public! OH REALLY??? Then the left's cancel culture of pasting and advertising anyone's name/address that disagree with them (the Covid era) or work for ICE or Law enforcement is what exactly!! The same strategy!

Instead of having Leftists virtue signal by removing trash and doing a lot of fluff community service work, the offenders doing real work would be 10 x more beneficial for everyone. What neighborhood are you in? Would be helpful context. I’m in LaFayette ES area and I’d say almost 50% of neighborhood have had a package stolen or car window smashed. Most do not call police because they know it would be pointless and could potentially hurt property values.

I live in the Janney ES catchment area and have never had a package stolen here. We did have one package stolen off our porch in the ten years we lived in Petworth. And I once had a grill taken off my patio in Dupont Circle, but possibly by the condo association.

I wouldn’t say I spend any time worrying about porch theft. I also wouldn’t say package theft is likely to be addressed in any way by whatever show of force the White House has in mind.

Columbia Heights haven't had any package theft in over 8 years; this is after we put in a mailroom door. There is theft if delivery folks don't buzz into the building or use the code.

Also haven't had any car break ins on our buildings property - some illegal parkers but no break ins.

Why would they risk stealing your package when they can take exactly what they want from the target in their preferred color and size?

Why do you think the above response is unreasonable. Trump has made a number of statements regarding federal intervention in blue cities due to immigration enforcement or "crime." A federal takeover is not a stretch if he is not pleased with local responses to federal intervention attempts. The base would love it if he kicked around a few blue cities and/or states.

1) Trump has repeatedly threatened to take federal control of Washington, D.C., citing concerns about crime and local governance. On August 5, 2025, following an attempted carjacking involving a former Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) staffer, Trump posted on Truth Social: “If D.C. doesn’t get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they’re not going to get away with it anymore.” He reiterated this stance to reporters on August 6, 2025, mentioning the possibility of revoking D.C.’s Home Rule or deploying the National Guard.
