Former Australian diplomat. He is listed as "First Secretary" at the Australian Embassy in the State Department's Fall 2020 Diplomatic List.

A 7-year-old girl was playing in the Mahony apartment with their kids. She went to the bathroom, and Thomas walked in to "help." That's where the abuse took place.

"An arrest warrant was submitted to the U.S. Attorney's Office in November 2023 in reference to this disclosure. At the time, the U.S. Attorney's Office declined to prosecute the defendant due to the consideration of the government's burden of beyond a reasonable doubt."

Do parents file civil suits in these cases? I don’t know how the initial victim’s parents could survive the wait for arrest

One of his sons attended the ISCA meets which required overnight travel.

USA swimming has so many rules in place I am generally not concerned about anything happening on deck. Volunteers & spectators can’t even use the same bathrooms. It looks like this guy operates by grooming both the children and their parents. I would be concerned about the travel meets, and talking to those families.

Anyone know if ASA has talked to families that went to ISCA yet?

Agree. Maybe I’m naive. I expect diplomats to be way better than Thomas Mahony.

That usually means one thing?

He's been scrubbed from the internet.

Only the FBI has the power to do that. Thomas has some good connections covering for him.

That's what's concerning me. But at least those connections haven't been strong enough to get him released on bond.

I’m betting the list of victims is longer than we can imagine.

That means he might be on a diplomatic visa and as a result, might not face consequences. My friend at the World Bank is on a diplomatic visa.

Please use some common sense or at least do a google search before posting. This is not a parking ticket. This man committed a serious crime and his “consequences” will be the same as they would be for any US Citizen. US law does not make exceptions that allow foreign nationals to abuse children on US soil.

PP you replied to. Sorry, you must not have experience in these matters. I have known serious cases where diplomats were sent to their home country and never had to face justice in the country of their victims.

They should. I would if I was one of the parents of a victim.

What were his other community positions? PTA, coaching?

Do the kids go to DCPS?

Yes and the guy has been on the HSA.

Oh no! Seems to be a pattern— overly involved in each area of his kids’ lives (ex photographing the team).

Wonder if DCPS was alerted?

How would they know given that the last name was misspelled in the original press release? I only heard through word of mouth. I think that MPD should correct its press release and include a photo.

The misspelling of the name is bad. The thing that’s worse is that the original victim count was stated as 2, but the victim count is actually 3 children. That needs to be corrected.

If you scroll down, is this him? I don’t remember what he looked like even though we’ve been in the same spaces.

Good lord:
“Thomas Mahony is a North Asia analyst for the Australian Government.

With accomplices of the Kelly Gang -- Australia's most notorious outlaws -- among his ancestors, Thomas has dedicated his life to public service in order to rehabilitate his family's honour.”

Sounds like he’s a Chinese asset.

There are two cases posted on the dc court website. One is under the name Thomas Mahony, the other with more detailed information is listed under Mahony Thomas. Think this was just (another) clerical error or do you think it was entered this way to evade detection?
