Sydney Sweeney / American Eagle Controversy

She is advertising jeans. Jeans. Clothing called jeans. It’s a play on words.

Have we devolved to a place where it is racist to feature a white person in any ad?

Must every ad feature a rainbow of people or a Kardashian wearing heavy bronzer to blur the race lines?

There’s nothing remotely offensive about this ad. Nobody would be talking about it if Beyoncé or JLo did the ad, which is very telling.

Personally, I think this attack on SS is probably coming from her BF’s ex or another celeb with a personal beef. Or a former manager, ex-PR Rep, or another hanger-on.

I hope someone will stop the madness with this attack campaign.

Everything is required to be a Benneton ad now.

We should also note that the red pillers sexualized her as a minor and think she’s stupid because she has big breasts.

I don't know her racial background, but her look isn't even a pure white/Aryan sort of look. She has a very mixed vibe.

Tell us you know nothing about eugenics without telling us.

This woman is literally a Type 1A Aryan. Literally the master race, as nazi scientists defined the bloodline.

Three primary traits:

Blonde hair

Blue eyes

Facial structure featuring squareness in the jawline and high, prominent cheek bones.

She’s as nazi as they come.

These comments are disgusting. It's almost as if you want to erase anyone who has whatever you deem to be Nazi features. How stupid....80% of the models throughout the 20 and 21st century don't have the right to have made money on their looks....because their looks are triggering, according to what you've implied? If you're going to talk about inclusiveness, you need to understand that goes for ALL races.

DP but there's a pretty huge gulf between not blindly cheering for an ad that goes out of its way to say Aryan genes are "good genes" and wanting to erase the blondes of the world. But I agree that the PPP should not have said "she's as nazi as they come" if what they meant (I hope) was that she embodies the physical ideal held up by Nazis - there's a difference between having Aryan features and being a member of the Aryan Brotherhood.

Where does the ad say that Aryan genes are good genes? SS isn’t even a blonde anyway.

Way to overthink.

But she doesn't look like a natural blonde

NP. Let’s not call Sweeney a Nazi, just because she fulfills the facial preferences. There’s no evidence for this at all.

Did you not watch the ad? Do you think people are just reacting to a blonde lady getting a job?

Won’t anyone think of the poor maligned blue-eyed, blond-haired models?!??!??

I really don’t want to make this put political but if you want to know part of the reason why Democrats lost and why favorability is at historic lows is precisely because of BS like this.

We have a social media problem. It’s not actual elected officials saying this, just randoms who love to be loud on the internet. The more extreme, the more viral it becomes. A few thousand people raging on the internet (not a lot of people in the grand scheme of things), has others pointing fingers and going “look at the democrats! This is why they lost!”.

She would be a great rep for a brand like, say Reformation, but this feels off-brand for AE. They needed an It Girl who is more "girl hot" and less "guy hot" like Zendaya or something.

It’s hilarious. As if SS needs to apologize to the brunettes and brown eyes of the world for merely existing. The fake meltdown was predictable from the usual people who thrive on controversy for clicks.

I don’t recall seeing anyone who has said that Sweeney needs to apologize for existing. But you have to exaggerate to make it look like a fake controversy. I imagine people who do that can’t deal with the real controversy as it exists.

Please educate this old lady on why it would have been better for Reformation.

Here are some of the clips from the AE YouTube from the ad campaign. Does this look like it’s trying to sell jeans to young women?

Totally disagree.

Guy hot and girl hot are the same thing. Beauty sells and it is nice to see a brand get back to beauty after the past few year of meh and downright ugly.

Is she allowed to be grateful for her good genes or not?

She’s “allowed“ to do anything. And I’m allowed to think she has poor taste for highlighting the genes she did and in the way she did.
