Elementary parents, pay attention to start times

It is silly. For kids who need more sleep, parents need to be parents and have them go to bed. My HS kid has some activities that start at 3:30, and others that start at 7:30 and don't let out till 9:30 PM. A later start would be nice but a nightmare.

I read somewhere that they were kicking elementary to a really late start. What a nightmare for parents and kids.
Its actually welcomed in our neighborhood.

Same here! I find it really funny that some posters think they can speak for everyone. For us, later elementary time is great.

But, all this outrage from the ES parents is a little bizarre. Is it that they don't want to pay for before-care? I

Before care isn’t as widely available as after care, as after care often translates into other after school activities. For example, it’s easy to staff a martial arts afterschool program because they’ll blend into evening classes.

The waitlist for before care SACC at late start elementary schools is long and the demand is high. Many parents already hate the 9:20 start time. Pushing it to 9:50 is adding salt to the wound.
False. SACC waitlists are much longer for aftercare. Hardly anyone is using the morning precare year after year.

Well, of course that’s the case now and in the past. School didn’t start near 10:00am.

You are fine with your kid starting school at almost 10? Do you work out of the home?

I’m specifically talking about late start elementary schools. Our elementary starts at 8:15, and I agree, hardly anyone uses morning SACC. Our friends have a 9:20 start time and they got into afternoon SACC before they made it off the morning waitlist.

Yup! Morning SACC at our late ES has a longer wait list than afternoon.

Nope at my local FCPS school the morning SACC has a much longer wait list than the afternoon SACC.

A 10:00am elementary school start is "welcomed" in your entire neighborhood? I don't believe that.

It would be dark by the time the elementary school kids get out of school in the winter!

Listening to work session now. I don’t think anything is happening next year. Lots of different opinions but a lot of valid concerns brought up.

I’m listening, too, and I agree. The school board members have made some good points tonight, and it seems more community input is needed.

It is difficult to fathom that anyone would advocate for a kindergartener to remain in school so late in the day. One cannot equate SACC with a traditional classroom environment. SACC is full of by play and social engagement.

You're such an idiot. This may be true at your high SES lots of SAHMommies school, but at schools with normal families who have two working parents, the waitlist for before care can be a year long - meaning, kindergarteners rarely get in unless they have a sibling already in the school. This is the case at my school and several others that I'm aware of.

Your childcare needs in the am aren’t anyone else’s problem except yours.

Well, this is ridiculous. I no longer have kids that age, but anything after 9 for elementary is insane. I prefer 8

There is a middle school discussion.

The link is in the first post of this thread.

This thread is about elementary parents paying attention to emails

With four kids ranging from k -7th I would much rather my middle schooler have these times since 1) they like to sleep late and 2) they are old enough to walk themselves to and from the buses. My kindergarten is the first to rise (6am! Yay!) and I’m waking my 7th grader up every day. This will be brutal on working parents esp with the RTO and kids with sports (my son starts soccer at 5pm!!)

The before school care is going to be packed.. what a terrible terrible idea by FCPS.
