There is not a college on the planet who is going to look at a B or an A or even a C from 7th or 8th grade during the admissions process. Most colleges drop the middle school gtades entirely when tgey use their formulas to calculate GPA. Some colleges look primarily at 10th-12th grade All colleges discount middle school courses from consideration during the application process. Middle school grades are completely ignored by colleges. Many colleges drop the weighted grades to calculate the GPAs. I have had 2 kids graduate, including one accepted to multiple top ten schools, and one preparing to apply to college. Middle school grades do not matter, particularly for college admission. There is not a college in the country that cares what your kid got in 7th grade Algebra 1. Call an admissions office and ask. They will laugh at the question. |
A 7 year old should never be walking home alone from the bus anytime, even if it’s not dark. They would already be in aftercare. Parents arrange aftercare for their elem kids if they can’t meet them afterschool. And if they’re going to get home at 5:30, parents may just be able to get them without needing aftercare. Win win. |
+1 PP is an idiot. We can almost guarantee their kid won’t be going to a t20 school. lol. |
Option E is great for our ES kids. Some ES already get out late now and it’s all fine. The kids love sleeping in the morning. |
Why do they factor those grades into your GPA then? What are they on the transcript if they don’t count? You cannot say for certain this for every college. Also, did your kid get any C’s in their high school classes that went on their transcript in middle school? If so they would not be getting into a t10 school period. |
Middle school classes are on your transcript credit for state requirements. Middle school classes are on your transcript for college admissions, but they are isolated in a separate column/boxes away from the high school grades and noted as middle school classes. The colleges ignore those middle school grades. Colleges don't care what grades your kid got in 7th or 8th grade. They don't even acknowlege it. They don't care one iota what your 12 or 13 year old did in middle school math. And yes, my kid who was accepted into multiple top 10 school got Bs in 8th grade for his "high school" algebra class. Schools did not care. They care about actual high school grades, not high school credit for middle school classes. You might not be aware of this, but colleges use their own formulas to calculate grades for admissions, which specifically discount things like middle school grades and even weighting in many cases. High school grades matter. Middle school grades do not. Don't believe me? Call UVA admisdions and ask them if your kid needs to worry about getting a B in 7th grade Algebra or 8th grade Spanish. They will laugh at the question. |
Colleges view those middle school classes as prerequisites, not high school classes. |
Yeah, you are wrong. Colleges do not look at middle school grades. That is a fact. |
I do NOT want any child in school until 4:30pm. Not elementary schoolers, not middle schoolers, IT IS THE STUPIDEST IDEA I HAVE EVER HEARD.
FCPS: LEAVE THINGS THE SAME. IT'S ONLY TWO YEARS. |
ABSOLUTELY NOT. My child has practice at 5:30. It's not enough time. |
Here is one (aming dozens) explainations of how middle school grades are irrelevant to college admissions. I picked it because it is the simplest explanation. There are many more if you care to look.
https://lsurec.com/do-colleges-look-at-middle-school-grades/ From the article: "... Do Colleges Consider Middle School Grades? Middle school grades play no direct role in college admissions. Admissions committees are exclusively concerned with a student’s performance in high school, focusing on factors such as: Academic achievements in high school: This includes GPA, class rank, and rigor of coursework. Extracurricular involvement: Sports, clubs, volunteer work, and other activities pursued during high school. Personal statements and essays: Colleges value essays that highlight growth, goals, and character development during high school years. Letters of recommendation: Teachers and mentors from high school provide insights into a student’s academic and personal attributes. The absence of middle school grades in these considerations makes it clear that they are not a factor in the admissions process. Even the most competitive institutions do not request or evaluate grades from sixth, seventh, or eighth grade...." |
I can say with 100% certainty for every college that middle school grades are not even looked at by college admissions officers. Call MIT and ask. Call Princeton. Call UVA. Call Radford. They do not care what your kid got in 7th grade math or 8th grade Spanish. Middle school grades do not count for college applications. Middle school is just 2 years. The schedule should be left alone. |
Not to derail but I guess that makes a strong argument for getting two years of foreign language over with in middle school, especially for students who are just taking it to check the box. |
The argument for doing the high school credits in middle school is to free up space in the schedule during 11th or 12th grade for advanced electives. The middle school grades don't matter one bit. But clearing extra class slots for 11th and 12th grade is very helpful. That is the benefit to taking HS credit in middle school. It has nothing to do with the middle school grades. Those grades don't matter and college admissions doesn't care what grades a kid got in 7th or 8th grade. |
$5 million won’t go very far towards new hires and the purchase and maintenance of busses. |
