I LOVED those things. |
Are you me? As kids we got to choose dinner on our birthdays. One year, I picked "Chicken Chow Mein" in the can. It was actually TWO cans taped together if you recall. One with the salty noodle mess and one with the crunchy topping. I have a feeling if I tried it today (if it still exists) I would not want it on my birthday. |
Hogies and grinders
Hogies and grinders Navy beans, navy beans Meatball sandwich... |
We call "sloppy joes" just BBQ sammies, and the one I make is amazing.
Beanies and weenies is another hit here |
I made SOS yesterday!! (chipped beef on toast), making sausage gravy this weekend |
Thanks! I'll just buy the whole thing and sell it (after I make my grilled cheese) out of the back of my car to the people who with the same crazy nostalgia. There are dozens of us! |
That's so funny. I was actually looking up recipes for this so that my DCs could try it. I made creamed tuna and they were big fans. But I think I'm going to make it with real beef cuts and not chipped beef. It will probably end up more like stroganoff. |
How does cheese go with tuna? I thought cheese + fish was verboten. |
Agree. All things in moderation. We have home made deviled eggs at Easter and there’s nothing wrong with a good homemade potato salad in the summer. There’s nothing wrong with well-made, healthy dips. Please tell us what you serve at your parties. |
It occasionally works. I've even had it at very fancy restaurants--not tuna melt, but cheese + fish. If you think about those melty lobster/crab type dishes too--that's all onion, cheese, butter and seafood, sherry |
I love fondue! We make it about twice a winter. But we buy our own cheeses so we can mix what we like. |
My kids love when I bust out the sloppy joes recipe. My family comes from Pittsburgh and we ate a dish called "ham bbq", which was not unique to our family.
Put a couple pounds of Isaly's chipped ham (look it up!) in a large stew pot with a couple bottles of Kraft BBQ sauce, some Worcestershire sauce, onion powder and garlic powder. Let it cook for an hour or two, then serve it up on some fluffy white Town Talk buns. For a side, cut up some hot dogs into chunks and fry them in a pan with Worcestershire sauce, then stir them into a pot of baked beans. Genuine BBQ! Just had it couple weeks ago when I was back visiting family. All of nitrates for the year in one meal. |
What did the fraction say to pi? Be rational. |
There's a cookbook called Baking Yesteryear (and a YouTube Channel (Dylan Hollis) where a guy digs up these mostly 20th century recipes and makes them. Some work, some are completely disgusting. I grabbed the book from the library and it was really fun to look through. If you find this stuff interesting, I'd recommend borrowing the book. |
Is it the Twinkies that changed? I used to love Ho-hos, but I bought some a few years back, and nope. Not delicious. I made sloppy joes yesterday, before I saw this. I have a kid who loves them. Add a little fish sauce to bump up the umami. |
